Maruti Suzuki has launched a number of products in the last few months which are of high significance for the typical Indian buyers’ taste. Be it the S-Presso or the XL6, the company is on the product offensive strategy to neutralize the aftereffect of the ripples arising from the current market slowdown.
Now the company is on its way to introduce a mid-cycle update to the famous Vitara Brezza. This update will keep sub-compact SUV fresh and relevant amidst the rising competition. This will be nothing but an updated Vitara Brezza Petrol. So in the report below, we clear the air around this new iteration of the upcoming subcompact SUV, Vitara Brezza to see what it has in store for us.
Maruti launched the Vitara Brezza back in 2016, and since then it has become one of the most famous SUVs of its segment. Soon after its introduction in the Indian market, it went on gather over 10,000 unit sales every month which was definitely a huge number considering Vitara Brezza was a newcomer and was offered solely in a diesel option.
But the entry of the new players in the segment including the Hyundai Venue and the Kia Seltos pose an immense threat to the crown of the Maruti Vitara Brezza. Hence, the company feels it high-time to bring forward an updated version of the Vitara Brezza which will also be offered in a petrol avatar.
For the uninitiated, the Maruti Vitara Brezza Petrol has already been snapped getting tested on the public roads, albeit in a fully camouflaged form. But this disguised form was enough to reveal that the facelifted Brezza will bring along a slew of exterior changes in order to keep the overall package exciting and relevant.
In detail, the facelifted Brezza will make use of a remastered front bumper which will sport newly designed fog lamp housing. Also new on the list will be its projector headlamps which will sport LED units. These units will flank an updated front grille which will be tweaked with tiny U-shaped chrome elements.
At the back, the overall design will majorly remain unaltered, save for an updated bumper which will go with the overall tweaked styling. Also, the earlier seen LED tail lamps, chrome boot appliqué, and high-set stop lamps will be carried on to the new Vitara Brezza.
Overall, the physical boxy silhouette of the vehicle will remain as it is, and it will still be very much recognizable as the Vitara Brezza.
Inside the new Vitara Brezza, the interiors will remain fairly unchanged, save for the new color pattern and upholstery. Also, it will most likely sport the Smartplay Studio infotainment system which will replace the current SmartPlay infotainment system.
Apart from the revamped exterior bits, major changes will be reserved for the mechanicals. Ever since its market launch, the Maruti Vitara Brezza has only been offered with the D13A 1.3L diesel engine. For the record, this engine is rated to deliver produces 66 kW (89 bhp) at 4,000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm.
But with the noose tightening around the diesel engines in India, this unit will be irrelevant from 1 April 2020. Since there aren’t any confirmed plans if the company is looking forward to updating its E15A 1.5L diesel to BS-VI standard, the future of the Vitara Brezza diesel appears to be gloomy. Hence, the company has started testing out the Brezza in petrol.
The spotlight will be on the new petrol unit which will carry forward the torch from the current diesel engine. The Vitara Brezza in petrol will make use of the familiar K15 1.5-liter SHVS four-cylinder engine which is currently seen doing duties on the Maruti Ciaz and the Maruti Ertiga. The engine in question is known to deliver 104 bhp of maximum power and 138 Nm of peak torque. The engine will be mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission choices.
Also, it will be safe to expect that the upcoming Vitara Brezza will sport a fairly update set of features in order to remain at par which the latest segment rivals.

Preceding reports also suggest that Maruti Suzuki is contemplating the use of the K10C 1.0-liter BoosterJet petrol engine, but we have reasons to believe such is not the case. The use of K10C will raise the costs involved and thus will not contribute to a good business model as per the Indian market expectations. For the record, this unit churns out 75 kW (101 bhp) and 150 Nm of torque.
Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki is also rumored to be testing out a few BS-VI diesel vehicles. Only recently, the S-Cross was spotted with a DDIS batching on the front fender, along with a document glued to the backglass reading BS-VI compliance. Also, a test mule of the BS-VI Ertiga diesel was spied in a similar manner.
Though what remains to be seen are the engine configurations these test mules have been running on. If we short down, the engine in question may be the Fiat-developed 1.6-liter diesel unit. It is called the DDiS 320 at Maruti Suzuki. Also, the last reports have claimed a BS-VI version of the DDIS 320 unit.
Reports also suggest that the production of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza in petrol has already commenced, hinting that its launch is just lurking around the corner. Expect the updated Brezza to launch in February 2020.
The Maruti Vitara Brezza is pitted against the likes of Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300. When launched, expect the pricing to go up slightly and thus Vitara Brezza may cost slightly higher than the current price tag of INR 7.63 – 10.37 lakh*.
