If you follow the Indian automotive industry, you must have noticed how the MPV segment has grown. From the ubiquitous utilitarian people movers to the recent car-based MPVs, we have come a long way. But the paradigm shift wasn't gradual at all!
- [Get On-Road Price] Price starts from: Rs 9.42lakh
- Engine: 1.5-litre Diesel
- Power: 100.6bhp Torque: 200Nm
- Fuel economy: 11.00kmpl
Half of the MPV are generally seen as taxis, an image which is very difficult to get rid of. The same image problem makes sure that families stay away from these vehicles. So what should a person - who's got six other people to travel with - do in such a situation? That's where the new line of MPVs available in the market make sense. You have Maruti Suzuki's Ertiga, Honda Mobilio and the Chevrolet Enjoy. You also have two other vehicles which have ruled the segment till now, the Toyota Innova and the Mahindra Xylo.
- [Get On-Road Price] Price starts from: Rs 7.49lakh
- Engine: 2.2L 2.5 L Diesel Turbo
- Power: 120bhp Torque: 280Nm
- Fuel economy: 12.00kmpl
But while these two offer good space, practicality and comfort, they have a small issue in front of them especially with these new kids looking so strong. The Innova might be very reliable and easy to run, but it's expensive to buy. Mahindra Xylo on the other hand is similarly priced as the new entrants but is more MUV like, something those upgrading from hatchbacks/sedans would not appreciate.
- [Get On-Road Price] Price starts from: Rs 5.8lakh
- Engine: 1.4litre petrol, 1.3litre diesel
- Power: 88.7bhp Torque: 202.2Nm
- Fuel economy: 16.02kmpl
So let's get back to the three options we have here. Starting with the one that came first to the Indian market, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. With prices ranging between Rs 5.8 lakhs and Rs 8.49 lakhs, this is the only offering by Maruti in the segment. A huge improvement from the Omni and EECO, think about the Ertiga as a longer and more practical version of the Swift. While it gets more space, Maruti Suzuki has made sure that its dynamics aren't compromised, so the Ertiga rides and handles very nice too. It comes with two engine options (1.4-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel) and three fuel choices: petrol, diesel, and CNG.?
- [Get On-Road Price] Price starts from: Rs 5.74lakh
- Engine: 1.4litre DOHC petrol, 1.3litre diesel
- Power: 102.6bhp/76bhp Torque: 131Nm/188Nm
- Fuel economy: 13.07kmpl / 18.02kmpl
It is the least expensive here with prices starting from Rs 5.74 lakhs and going up to Rs 8.13 lakhs for the top-spec LTZ variant. It also gets two engine choices and corresponding two fuel options: petrol and diesel. It distances itself from the Tavera with better interior, but the lack of attractive styling for the exterior takes its toll on the desirability factor of the Enjoy. The only rear wheel drive (RWD) vehicle among the three, the Enjoy is good to drive but the diesel can feel a bit under-powered when the vehicle is fully laden.
- [Get On-Road Price] Price starts from: Rs 6.49lakh
- Engine: 1.5L i-VTEC, 1.5L i-DTEC
- Power: 117bhp/99bhp Torque: 145Nm/200Nm
- Fuel economy: 17.3kmpl / 24.2kmpl
These two might have gained their own set of market shares, but what's making everyone go crazy at the moment is Honda Mobilio. After a long but successful time that Honda enjoyed relying only on petrol powered products, the Amaze sedan brought a lot of new things for the Japanese carmaker. Availability of a diesel powertrain aside, the Amaze also brought the Mobilio. They share the same platform, after all! Launched in July, the Mobilio can be had in either petrol or diesel, with prices starting from Rs 6.49 lakhs. There's also a more stylish (and loaded) 'RS' version available at just a shade under Rs 11 lakhs.
Choosing one among these three won't be too difficult too, because the competition is largely between the two Japs here. The Mobilio isn't just a well rounded package, it also has a novelty value at the moment. The Ertiga is certainly a very strong competitor but its position in the market is in danger.
