Tata revealed its highly-anticipated premium hatchback at an event in Rajasthan yesterday. The Indian carmaker might be a little late to the party, but the Altroz will surely be a banger in the segment largely dominated by the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai i20.

Agile, Light, Flexible and Advanced are the qualities that Tata believes its Altroz hatch possesses, and hence it is the first car to be based on the brand’s ALFA ARC platform. In terms of size, the car keeps up with both the aforementioned rivals.

In terms of design, the Altroz incorporates Tata’s Impact 2.0 design, and it certainly does it in a beautiful way. Upfront, the Altroz sports a honeycomb mesh grille design, which is surrounded by its aggressively-styled headlamps on both sides. The fog lamps sit below the headlights, on the front bumper, and also houses the cars LED daytime-running lights.

The side profile features protruding wheel arches, along with a character line that runs across its body towards the rear. The rear door handles of the car have neatly been tucked into the top corners of the rear doors near the C-pillars. Tata has also equipped the Altroz with laser-cut 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, that add to its sporty appeal.

At the rear, the hatch gets a large black section on the boot lid which features the car’s name in bold letters, right under the carmaker’s emblem. The Altroz gets a sleek design for the wraparound LED tail lamps, along with a plastic insert on the lower portion of the rear bumper.

The roof, ORVMs and the rear spoiler of the car have been finished in piano black to make things a little spicier on the outside.

Tata Altroz Rear

Tata is offering the Altroz with five different monotone color options, which include High-Street Gold, Skyline Silver, Downtown Red, Midtown Grey, and Avenue White. The gold, white and red paint schemes also get the option of a blacked-out roof on the top-end variant.

Tata Altroz Interiors

Inside the cabin, the car features a dual-tone black and grey theme. The overall interior layout resembles the interiors of its bigger sibling, Nexon. The Altroz gets a floating touchscreen infotainment unit powered by Harman, with the AC vents placed below it. The car also features a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth mounted controls.

Apart from the front and rear armrests and the flat rear floor that makes seating a third passenger easier at the back, the car is also equipped with doors that can open at 90 degrees, making ingress and egress hassle-free.

Tata Altroz Features

Given the competition in the segment, Tata had to feature-pack the Altroz in order to make a difference in the segment sales chart. The carmaker has done just that and has loaded the car with a plethora of features including first-in-class ambient lighting, cruise control, a 7-inch TFT display for the semi-digital instrument cluster, auto headlamps, electric tailgate, a wearable key and a lot more.

The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system on offer comes integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and the car comes equipped with a 6-speaker Harman audio system. Apart from that, the Altroz also gets two different driving modes, namely City and Eco.

On the safety front, the Altroz comes packed with driver and passenger airbags, ABS with EBD, Corner Stability Control (CSC), reverse parking sensors and camera along with ISOFIX child seat anchorages on the top-end variant.

Powering the Altroz are two BS6-compliant powertrains – a 1.2-liter three-cylinder naturally aspirated unit, along with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder diesel mill. The former puts out 86 PS of maximum power and 113Nm peak torque, while the latter produces 90 PS power and 200 Nm torque. For now, both the engines can only be had with a 5-speed manual transmission.
