Bajaj Auto has launched the Bajaj Chetak as its first offering in the electric vehicle segment. The name Bajaj Chetak can give goosebumps to the people from the earlier generation. Almost every house had one in the 80s and 90s. The present Bajaj Chetak is different in virtually every respect except for the name that it has borrowed from the iconic scooter of yesteryears. Here are seven things that you should know about the new electric scooter, Bajaj Chetak.
The Pricing is a steal - Extremely Combative
The Bajaj Chetak electric scooter price is Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom). This electric scooter comes with a premium variant, as well that costs Rs 1.15 lakhs. The base variant, Bajaj Chetak Urbane is available with drum brakes, whereas the Bajaj Chetak Premium comes equipped with disc brakes, that make this vehicle dearer by Rs 15,000. Other than this distinction, there is not much to distinguish between the two variants.
Bookings and Expected Deliveries
Bajaj Auto has already started accepting bookings for the Bajaj Chetak Electric. Now, this is not new for the scooter at all. In its prime, the earlier version of the Bajaj Chetak used to have a booking period that used to extend to more than a year. However, the wait will not be that long, as the deliveries could begin as early by the end of this month. The scooter will be released in the market through select KTM dealerships in Pune and Bengaluru.
Interested buyers can book the electric vehicle by paying a nominal amount of Rs 2,000 from January 15, 2020. The innovative aspect this time around is that the retailing will be entirely through the digital mode. Bajaj Auto has also arranged for customers to experience the controls first-hand by availing the benefits of test rides at the Experience Centres. It is a new concept as far as two-wheelers are concerned. Pune hosts the first such Experience Centre in the country.
Battery and Engine
The efficiency of an electric vehicle is evident from its battery. On this count, the Bajaj Chetak Electric scooter is blessed as it comes with a high-quality lithium-ion battery capable of delivering exemplary power and torque. The torque performance of 16Nm ensures one of the most comfortable riding experiences you can have. The charging time is a crucial aspect of any electric vehicle.
Though it does not come with a fast charger, the battery does charge up to 25% within an hour. However, the regular charging of the battery takes about five hours using the household 5-15A three-pin electrical socket. As far as mileage performance is concerned, the Bajaj Chetak Electric Sport and Eco modes deliver 85km and 95km respectively on a single charge.
Bajaj Chetak Electric will be available in six colour options that include Blue, White, Red, Beige, Black, and Silver. The scooter comes with an entirely digital instrument cluster with an innovative Bluetooth connectivity feature. A dedicated mobile app makes it easy for the company to offer mobility solutions that include data communication, user authentication, and security features.
The beautifully-shaped LED headlights with DRLs complement the vehicle’s exquisite appearance. Electronic switches with feather touch technology make it a dream to handle the electric scooter. The highlighting feature of the Bajaj Chetak Electric is the reverse gear functionality. The intelligent braking system makes it one of the safest vehicles to ride on.
Comfort and Convenience
The scooter comes with a single-piece seat, much unlike the older generation Bajaj Chetak that had two separate seats for the driver and the pillion rider. The single-piece seat design is more in tune with the demands of the modern generation. It not only provides comfort to the pillion rider but also ensures that the rider has more legroom. The padded seats make riding the vehicle one of the most natural things to do.
Apart from being a comfortable vehicle to ride, the Bajaj Chetak Electric scooter is exceptionally smooth on your back, as well. The single-sided telescopic suspension set-up at the front wheel and single-sided spring set-up at the rear are the best ones available in their segments. The Urbane variant comes with a drum brake for the front wheels, whereas the Premium version gets disc versions. Besides, CBS is also available as an enhanced safety measure.
After Sales Service
Bajaj Auto offers some of the best after-sales services in the industry. The auto manufacturing major is offering a 3-year or 50,000km warranty as a standard feature. Apart from this excellent offering, Bajaj is providing three free services to maintain its reputation in the market.
Bajaj Chetak truly has a reputation to maintain. Bajaj Auto has touched a raw nerve by naming its first electric scooter model as Chetak. It has brought back golden memories for the earlier generation for whom owning a Bajaj Chetak was something of a status symbol.
