Buyers guide - Passing the test drive!

Snapshot: We bring you few points that need to be considered when test driving a car that you plan to buy.

When it comes to buying a car, it is important to test drive your options before putting your money on a specific car. There are certain things that one needs to do when going for a test drive before making the final decision. Test drive is one of the important ways to make sure you are buying the right car as per your needs.

Below are few points that need to be considered when test driving a car that you plan to buy.

Test drive as per your convenience
Test driving a car is always considered a sales situation. And if you are in a hurry it can be an advantage for the dealer. Therefore plan your test drive in advance and have plenty of time to fetch all the information that is required.

Acceleration
Find a safe place and test the car’s acceleration. The car should have enough power to make you feel safe and confident when overtaking on the highway, delivering it in a linear fashion. Also try accelerating on an uphill road.

Handling
A good way to get a sense of a car’s handling is to turn at varying speeds. Handling should be responsive and con?dence inspiring. Quick left-right transitions and simulated emergency evasive manoeuvres should not cause the car to lose composure and become unstable.

Steering
The way a car steers will have a major impact on your driving. Road feel can range from razor sharp precision to a sluggish steering. How quickly does the car react to steering inputs?

Braking
Any test drive should include one or two panic stops. Even cars equipped with anti-lock braking system (ABS) vary in stopping power depending on how the system is engineered and setup at the factory and the grip of the tyres. Braking hard enough to activate the ABS will make the brake pedal vibrate at high frequency, but it shouldn’t feel spongy and the car should track a straight line on a level road even during a maximum performance stop.

Check the interior
Check if all the controls can easily operated. Do you have enough room for your legs? Don’t be afraid to push all the buttons, turn all the knobs and feel the quality of the plastic bits. Test the AC as well.

Get a proper feel
See if the car feels comfortable. Turn off the radio and roll down the windows, and listen for any noises. And don’t hesitate to ask the dealer lots of questions.
