Buying Guide - Which Car Should I Buy - Hatch, Sedan, SUV or MPV?

Snapshot: Choosing the right car is a tough job and lot of people end up buying cars that won’t suit them or their needs. People need to asses all their needs before they go ahead and buy anything.

Earlier it was very easy to narrow down on a car. There were very few options in every segment and even fewer that were reliable. Now however things have changed. There are so many manufacturers that offer vehicles in almost every segment. Even the names that had a rep for being unreliable have come a long way in terms of quality and reliability. There weren’t many classes of vehicles earlier either but now there are different kind of body styles apart from the usual ones.

Choosing the right car is a tough job and lot of people end up buying cars that won’t suit them or their needs. People need to asses all their needs before they go ahead and buy anything. They also need to keep in mind the resources at disposal and the needs of passengers who will be occupying the car. We list here some of the factors you should keep in mind when you are trying to determine if you should buy a hatchback, sedan, SUV or MPV.

Budget

?

Obviously this is the first thing you would have to think about when you are planning to decide on a car. Hatchbacks are relatively affordable as compared to other class of vehicles. Then there are the compact sedans. The only advantage you have with them is slightly more space for slight premium in price.Moving up you will find the mid-range sedans and compact SUVs. This is one of the hottest segments right now as more as more players come up with their compact SUVs. A large SUV or MPV would be costly but would make more sense if you have a large family. You should consider the kind of car only according to your budget. Try to avoid entry level variants as they generally compromise on safety and security features. The costs not only involve the initial cost of the car but also the cost of ownership. This is quite possible that a car is affordable to buy but cost of services and spares is steep.

Usage

Determine the kind of driving you do often. Different kind of cars suit different driving. A hatchback or compact sedan would be happier during your daily commute than on a long straight highway. For that you might want to have a nice sedan or a MPV. But again if you decide to take a MPV for your daily commute across the city, you are going to spend longer sitting in those rush hour traffic jams. So it is very important to determine the kind of driving. While the light cars with small engines can be great city cars, they can be a bit scary at highway speeds. If you are the adventurous kind and like to go off roading with your friends every now and then, SUV would be the obvious choice for you. The distance you clock every month would also make a difference. Calculate if spending the extra amount on a diesel would make sense considering the difference in fuel efficiency, fuel costs and service costs over duration of 3-4 years. You will be surprised at how many people end up paying more on a diesel car than a petrol car over duration of 3-4 years. Fuel efficiency is an important factor if you do a lot of driving but you can move it down on the list if you don’t drive around much.

Space

The space would be an important factor in deciding the kind of car. You need to have a place to park the car safely. Parking space is really an issue in metro cities where people end up paying a lot of money for a decent parking space. In such a case, you are better off buying a hatchback or compact SUV rather than a gigantic SUV. Obviously it is inevitable if a SUV or MPV is going to serve your purpose. The space issues don’t only apply on the parking spot you are going to use. We said that for the roads as well. Small towns might not even provide you enough opportunities to drive out a saloon or MPV. So as long as you are not planning to have a car just for those weekend getaways, keep this in mind as well.
