Communication between two people in very important. And if you want others to know what you are up to, you simply tell them or talk about it. But when you are on the road and behind the steering wheel, and you want to let other road users know about your intentions in advance, then regular methods of communications are of no use. But most of the drivers simply forget this simple concept. They change lanes, overtake without indicating or without any warning, which can cause accident. Using indicators is an essential part of road safety as it inform other road users about the driver's intentions. If you fail to use indicators, it can lead to accidents. Turning from a main road
If you don't see traffic signal at an intersection you want to turn from and you are still on the main road, it is better to use the indicators to signal your intentions before changing directions.
If at any roundabout and you want to turn, you must indicate. Also signal the other road users before you exit the roundabout. Always give way to cars that are already present in the roundabout.
Changing lanes or turning
If you see other cars on the road, always use indicators before changing your lane. When turning, indicate in advance the side you are going to go before the actual turn. Turn only when the road is clear for you and you are sure about it.
Indicate at least 30m before the U-turn. Double check your mirrors to ensure that all cars behind you are aware of your intention. Also, make sure that there is no oncoming vehicle before you take the turn.
To be on a safer side, the driver should always indicate his intention of overtaking. Indicate when you pull out into the other lane as well as when you get back into the same lane.
How early should I start indicating?
Turn on the indicators well in advance so that the car behind you knows where you are heading. Start indicating when you're about 200 feet from the turn. If on the highway, make sure you start using indicators 900 feet before the turn.
Using hazard warning lights
Use the hazards warning lights when your car has broken down, or if you have parked your car improperly and is causing a temporary hindrance to other traffic.
