Car maintenance guide - Ways to protect car engine

Snapshot: To help you take proper care of the car engine, we bring different ways to protect the engine.

Engine is the heart of the car and it needs to be looked after. Car engine needs a regular check-up and maintenance to keep it in good running condition. Below are tips to protect the engine and keep it away from any kind of serious problems.

Change oil regularly
Changing the engine oil on a regular basis is the most important thing. Oil is important because it keeps most of the engine parts well lubricated. Your car engine cannot function without oil. If oil is not changed frequently it can cause damage leading to high repair cost.

Keep the cooling system working
Make sure the cooling system is in working condition. The cooling system of a car includes the radiator, thermostat, water pump and coolant. Ensure there is enough coolant in the car in order to protect the engine from overheating. Check the coolant level often and make sure it is above the minimum mark and below the maximum mark.

Let the engine breathe
Not only fuel, but air is also important for keeping the engine running. When changing the oil, make sure you check the air filter also. Air filter keeps dirt, leaves, bugs from getting inside the engine. Replace it if it is clogged with dirt.

Check the leaks
You don't have to be an car expert to spot any kind of leak. Make sure oil and antifreeze are not leaking out of the engine. Check under the hood if you can smell anything leaking or check under the car if you see any kind of leakage onto the road.

Fill up fuel before it's too low
Make sure the car is not running on empty. If you do so, it can turn out to be pricey and dangerous. Fuel is just like a coolant for the electric fuel-pump engine. If the car is running on very low fuel it can cause the pump to suck in air, which creates heat and causes damage to the fuel pump. Keep the fuel tank not less than 1/4 full.

Check the belts
The rubber belt on the engine helps in running the fan, water pump, alternator and air conditioner. Normally the belt last very long, but overtime it can show signs of wear and tear and begin to crack. If the belt is making any sound or spinning then either it needs to be adjusted or replaced. You can also check if there is any crack or not on the belt by simply turning it.

Change the fuel filter
Fuel filter is important as it protects the engine from harmful residue and particles in the fuel. To keep the engine in good working condition, replace the fuel filter on time as it will keep the fuel flowing into the engine clean.
