The entry level crossovers are yet to impress and make a mark with their sales numbers since the cars like Etios Cross and Cross Polo did not sell very well.

The BMW X1 competes with the Audi’s Q3 in the entry level crossover segment . We do a specification comparison of the cars and see which one would make a better buy.

Audi Q3 exteriors Vs BMW X1 exteriors
The BMW X1 that launched in the year 2010 and has received a facelift recently. The car has indeed played a major role in making BMW’s more accessible. The new car does not carry any major noticable changes, there are xenon headlights with chrome garnish and twin circular rings with LED accents at the front. The ORVMs have integrated turn indicators and a revised rear end too looks striking. The car looks more like a station wagon standing along side the Q3.
The Q3 on the other hand looks more like an SUV and has more road presence. The grille has a chrome surround around the hexagonal grille that carries square pattern, the headlights on the sides are very sharp and look great. There are large air intakes in lower part of the bumper which go well with the looks of the car. There are huge wheel arches that give the car a very muscular look from the sides. The strinking alloy wheels too make the car look fresh and more appealing. The rear of the car is more subtle in comparion but LED housed in the taillights make the car look stylish and modern.

The black and beige interiors are put together and are well-styled in a typical Audi fashion. The design of the of dashboard is very understated but the layout it great and works very well. The fit and finish of the plastics is top notch and has space for five people inside their cabin.
The Q3 is relatively taller and provides a more SUV like driving position. The car comes loaded with luxury features like - adjustable lighting, electronic speedometer with odometer and trip odometer, rev counter, digital clock, coolant temperature display, fuel gauge, heat insulating glass, Navigation system. The infotainment system of the car includes - 6.5 inch TFT display with 10 speakers, subwoofer in the spare wheel, 6-channel amplifier Bluetooth, USB, SD card and Aux-in connectivity. There is large loading bay at the rear at 460 litres which can be further expanded by folding the rear seats(60:40 split).
The BMW X1 has all black theme for interiors with brushed wood or aluminum inserts and is indeed very appealing. The plastic quality is top notch and the dashboard has been well laid out and uses premium quality plastics. You get features like - navigation system with 8.8-inches screen, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers, power seats, rear parking camera, panoramic glass roof etc. The instrument cluster shows all relavent information to the driver. The car has enough space to carry five passengers in comfort. There is a 420-litre boot space which can be further increased by folding seats. The infotainment system includes a 22.3 cm colour display, 8 speakers with voice commands, Bluetooth, Aux-in and USB connectivity.
Audi Q3 engine Vs BMW X1 engine
The Q3 engine options include two options of diesel engine. A 2-litre diesel engine and slightly detuned version of the 2-litre diesel engine which produces lesser power. In the top variant of the car is coupled with a 7-speed automatic transmission and get a four wheel drive system. The top variant uses a higher powered diesel engine that produces a peak power of 174.33bhp at 4200rpm and torque of 380Nm between 1750-2500rpm. The S-edition gets a detuned 2.0 litre diesel engine which produces 138.12bhp at 4200rpm and is coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission and drives only the front wheels.
The new BMW X1 comes equipped with only one diesel engine option. The 2.0-litre engine produces 184bhp of maximum power at 4000rpm and peak torque of 380Nm between 1750-2750rpm. The engines are coupled with ZF eight speed automatic transmission. In case of all models of the BMW X1 you get a rear wheel drive system.
Audi Q3 mileage Vs BMW X1 mileage
The Audi Q3 with its more powerful engine delivers 12kmpl in the city and 15.73kmpl on highway conditions. The less powerful engine delivers 14.25kmpl in the city and 17.32kmpl on highways.
The BMW X1 with its 2.0-litre diesel engine and highly efficient ZF eight speed automatic transmissions help the car deliver a mileage of 13kmpl in the city and and 17.05kmpl on highways.

The Q3 gets 312mm ventilated disc at front and 282mm solid discs at rear. The car also has a lot of other safety features like ESP (Electronic stabilization program), ABS (Antilock Braking system), Hill start assist, traction control, full size airbags, rear side airbags, front side airbags, head airbags, electronic vehicle immobilization device, tyre pressure monitoring system, side-on collision protection and wheel-selective torque distribution.
The BMW features enhanced safety features like Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) including Automatic Stability Control (ASC + T), Dynamic, Traction Control (DTC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC). The Audi Q3 stands distinctly tall in terms of looks and it would not be wrong if we say that the X1 cannot match that. Looks of a car are indeed a subjective thing and you may prefer BMW X1 over Audi Q3.
However, the BMW X1 comes loaded with safety and comfort features and the Audi Q3 does matches them closely but falls just short. The BMW is a better car to buy if you prefer car like handling ability and want to enter the club of premium crossover segment by paying the minimum price.
