The entry-level sedan market is ever growing like the hatchback segment in India and some of the cars in this segment have done really well for the company’s fortunes. Out of Toyota Etios and Chevrolet Sail the former has sold pretty well unlike the Sail which has struggled and has not managed good numbers since its introduction.

We compare the specifications of the Chevrolet Sail Vs Toyota Etios and see which one is better.

The specification comparison sheet has been prepared by comparing Chevrolet Sail LT ABS (Diesel) with the Toyota Etios VXD and Chevrolet LT ABS (Petrol) with the Toyota Etios VX (Petrol).

Chevrolet Sail exteriors Vs Toyota Etios exteriors
The Sail has been derived from the Sail hatchback and the Etios from the Etios Liva. Both the cars manage to look very smart and stylish which unlike some of the cars in this category which do have good rear styling. The boot in both these cars does not look stubby or chopped off and is very well integrated.

The Sail looks very understated and is an overall better design. The clear and large headlamps at front and big tailights are very proportionate and compliment each other and other designing elements very well. The car looks very modern and has futuristic design, the tall shoulder line make the car look very muscular.

The Etios on the other hand looks good from the front quarters. The side too, that carries ORVMs with integrated indicators makes the car look sporty. However, the rear end styling of the car is bland and looks somewhat confused. The triangular shaped tail lamps somehow does not go very well with the other design elements and the car does not look very appealing from the rear end.

The Sail for us is a clear winner in term of style as it looks more elegant and puts together all the design elements in a more subtle and beautiful way.

Chevrolet Sail interiors Vs Toyota Etios interiors
The Sail has well-built interiors and are laid out well too but look very plain and unappealing. There is enough space and storage area for knick-knacks all around the car. There are six bottle holders in the car and the top variant of the Sail gets an audio system with Bluetooth audio streaming and telephony. The very basic features like driver seat height adjustment and dead pedal are missing, you do not get steering mounted audio controls even on the top variant. The car can easily carry five passengers in comfort and there is no shortage of space. The boot space of the car is 370 litres only which is not impressive considering the size of the car.

The Etios uses two-tone premium quality plastics for interiors. The interiors are well equipped and laid-out except that the instrument cluster which seems out of place and would have been better placed in direct view of the driver. The driver’s seat is height adjustable and there are features like remote-operated fuel lid and tailgate, auto-down driver side window, the electric power steering with tilt mechanism, cooled glove box, 12 V power outlets, electronically adjustable ORVMs, tachometer, a digital tripmeter, front cabin lights and rear defogger. The boot of the car is massive and offers 595 litres of storage space.

Chevrolet Sail engine Vs Toyota Etios engine
The Chevrolet Sail comes with two engine options - 1.3 litre turbo-charged diesel engine and a 1.2 litre petrol engine. The petrol engine develops 82.5bhp at 6000rpm and a peak torque of 108.5Nm at 5000rpm. The diesel engine is sourced from Fiat and it develops a healthy power of 74bhp at 4000rpm and peak torque of 190Nm at 1750rpm.

The Etios comes with a diesel and a petrol engine option too. The petrol engine of 1496cc capacity and generates a maximum power of 88.76bhp at 5600rpm and delivers a maximum torque yield of 132Nm at 3000rpm. The diesel engine is of 1364cc capacity and generates a maximum power of 67.06bhp at 3800rpm and peak torque of 170Nm between 1800-2400rpm.

All the engines on both these cars are coupled with a 5 speed automatic transmission and there is no option for automatic gearbox on either of these cars.

Chevrolet Sail mileage Vs Toyota Etios mileage
The Chevrolet Sail petrol offers a mileage of 18.2kmpl on highways and 15.9kmpl in the city conditions. The diesel engine on the other hand offers 18.9kmpl in the city conditions and on highways, 22.1kmpl.

The petrol Etios is not very far in terms of mileage and offers 13.5kmpl in the city and 16.78kmpl on highways. The diesel on the other hand offers 20.32kmpl in city conditions and 23.59kmpl on highways.

Chevrolet Sail safety features Vs Toyota Etios safety features
The Sail uses disc brakes at front and drum brakes at rear. Other safety features that the car includes in the remote keyless entry, dual airbags, EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) and Child-protection rear door locks. There are two airbags for the front passengers that should prevent the passengers in case of a mishap. The car also uses a safe-cage design with a 3-point force dispersion structure with in-built crumple zones and side impact beam in doors provide safety for the occupants.

The Etios comes with ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. You also get features like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), SRS airbags, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), engine immobilizer, keyless entry, driver seatbelt warning and door ajar warning etc. which further enhance the safety of the occupants. The Etios also offers parking assistance as feature which the Sail does not.

There are plenty of options available in the entry level segment and there are many cars to choose from. To prevent expenditure in the R&D, majority of car makers now offers saloons that are derived from hatchbacks. However, the car that are derived seldom come out as good as expected.

The Chevrolet Sail though misses out on features like steering mounted controls, height adjustment feature for driver’s seat, it stands tall in terms of design and there are very few cars in this segment that manage to come this close in terms of exterior styling.

The Etios offers a better equipment list and also has better quality interiors. The car does not quite satisfy in terms of exterior styling and you wish to buy the car if you prefer the looks of it.
