The Spark is Chevrolet India’s cheapest offering in India. It has been in India for more than a decade. The car was first offered by the Daewoo as Matiz and at the time when it was lauched, it was regarded as the best looking car. The car was rechristined as Spark and was introduced in India again by Chevrolet. The car looks compact and is indeed beautiful to look at. The Spark features a typical Chevrolet two part grille upfront with the bow-tie logo in the center. The headlights are from the old model of the car and there are round fog lamps housed in the front bumper which complement the other design cues. From the side profile, you would notice the droopy nose which makes the car look cute. There’s a sharp waistline which runs across the length and wheel arches which impart the car its character. On the roof, you would notice that the car carries silver roofrails which further enhance the looks. Just like the front of the car, the boot looks unique with its integrated taillight cluster which houses brake lights, indicators and reverse light. The rear bumper, with a pair of round reflectors adds further character to the car.
The new Alto K10 is a more conventional looking car and looks somewhat better that the outgoing Alto. Designers have redesigned the front headlamp and rear taillight cluster. The car gets larger sweptback headlamps along with a chrome strip at the front. There is an extended snout which makes the car look longer than before enhance the front fascia of the car. On the side of the car, you would find wheel arches and strong waist line crease which do give the car some character. The car is also longer than the Spark at 3545mm. The wheelbase is long too at - 2360mm. The rear of the car is more sharper and angular than before. There are strong creases on the tailgate which give the impression of a more sharper design. The Chevrolet Spark was perhaps the first car to use centrally located instrument cluster. The centrally mounted instrument cluster may not be to everyone’s taste. The car uses black and silver theme for interiors. The quality of plastics is okay. The two spoke steering wheel, however, looks cheap. The car is spacious and can carry five adults in comfort. You would not find many places to keep knick-knacks which is a big minus point. The car comes equipped with center mounted stop lamp, door ajar warning display, central locking, air conditioner with heater. There’s a two 2DIN audio system with USB, Aux-in compatibility and four speakers. The car also has a sizeable 170 litre boot which is large enough to carry big bags of luggage.
The Maruti Alto K10 has much better interiors than the previous generation of the car. The plastics are okay and the fit and finish is decent too. The beige and black interiors of the car work in favour of it makes the cabin look very pleasant and up market. The car is capacious and there is enough space to seat five passengers in comfort. You get features like front power windows, power steering, cup holders, bottle holder at front. The seats are in new blue color are come with integrated headrests. The safety equipment level on both these car is extremely basic. The Spark uses disc brakes on front wheels and drum brakes at rear which work with the help of brake booster. You get a collapsible steering column, central locking, rear doors with child safety locks, 3-point ELR seat belts for the front and rear passengers and 2 point seat belt for the rear passenger sitting in the middle.
The Alto K10, just like the Chevrolet Spark uses disc brakes at front and drum brakes on rear wheels. You get all the features present on the Spark, in addition, you also get the option to choose driver side airbag.
Both the cars are beautiful in their own right and there is nothing outstanding about any one car in particular that can be pointed out. In terms of looks, we would regard both the cars as equal. However, taking into account the service backup of Maruti and the fact that Maruti K10 is comparatively cheaper and offers equally decent equipment level. The K10 makes a more compelling buy if you are already not sold on the looks of the Spark.
