An entry level hatchback is a car that can be considered as a stepping stone for average middle class Indian families that they purchase to gain entry into the 4-wheeler club. Until recently, there was a dearth of cars in this segment and only few companies exploited the market. The realization of the fact that the number of middle class families in India is on the rise and an alternative that a car company can provide to boost their sales in this segment has come late to some companies.
Datsun, known world over for offering affordable cars, launched their car ‘Go’ in India sometime back. In this comparison, we compare the specifications of the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 with the Datsun Go to see how they fare against each other.
The specification comparison sheet has been prepared by comparing Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 VXi (O) Vs Datsun Go T.
Datsun Go Vs Alto K10 (Design and Exterior)
The new Alto K10 looks a lot like the ‘Maruti Alto’ and ‘Maruti Zen’. The car looks very compact and stylish. The new headlights, body colored bumper, extended snout, stylish front fog lamps enhance the front fascia of car. The top-variant of the car get full wheel covers whereas the lower models get the centre cap only. The rear end of the car has looks much like the old Zen. With the facelift, the car indeed looks fresh and the facelift does add punch to the car.
The Datsun Go is a fairly large hatchback considering the price it comes at. There is hexagonal honeycomb grille with chrome garnish at front. The windshield carries single wiper. The car is very angular and the styling cues can be seen in the headlamps and overall styling of the car.
The side profile of the car carry prominent creases and the car looks great from this angle. At the rear end, there are more creases on the tailgate, between the tail-lamps. The taillights are very simple and squarish. Just like the Alto K10, the Go hatch rides on 13-inch steel wheels which unlike on Alto K10, look small on this car.
Datsun Go Vs Alto K10 (Interior and Features)
The interiors of the new Alto K10 are far better than the car it replaced. Power windows are available only at the front. Controls for adjusting the rear view mirrors are available inside. The new steering wheel looks more stylish and the seats come with integrated headrests. The quality of plastics used feels cheap. The car comes with a radio & CD player with support for USB and Aux-in along with two speakers.
The car comes with various standard features including climate control unit with heater, front power windows, electric trip-meter with tachometer, illumining instrument cluster with speedometer, vanity mirror, sun visor, ash tray, accessory socket, cup holder, rear parcel tray, accessory socket, tinted window glass etc.
The quality of plastics used in the GO and the overall fit and finish is decent. The dashboard and console design is unique and unlike any other car in the segment. The front bucket seats have slim backrests and integrated head rests.
The centre console houses the distinct umbrella-type handbrake, mobile holder, a digital tachometer, a trip meter and an electronic fuel gauge that shows distance to empty, average and instantaneous fuel economy and low fuel warning. The mobile docking station gets an Aux-in, a USB port. There are power windows at front; the rear doors get manual controls to operate the windows.
Datsun Go Vs Alto K10 (Engine and Transmission)
The Alto K10 comes with a 1 litre (998cc), 3 cylinder, petrol engine that develops a peak power of 67.1bhp at 6200rpm and 90Nm of peak torque at 3500rpm. The engine is mated with a five speed manual transmission.
The Datsun Go comes with a 1.2 litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine. It is the same engine that powers the Nissan Micra, however, the engine has been tuned differently and offers better fuel efficiency. The engine produces 67.06bhp of power and 104Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to a 5-Speed manual transmission.
Datsun Go Vs Alto K10 (Safety Feature and Mileage)
Both the cars offer very basic safety equipment like 3 point safety belts for all passengers, ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear and child safety locks. The Alto also offers driver side airbag and engine immobilizer which the Datsun Go does not offer.
The refined petrol engine on K10 delivers an impressive fuel efficiency of 24kmpl on highways while 19kmpl in city. Datsun Go on the other hand delivers 17kmpl in the city and 20.63kmpl on the highway.
The entry level hatchback segment now has pretty decent cars to choose from. The Alto K10 is also a great car which has proved itself time and again and has many satisfied buyers. Moreover, the car comes from India’s leading car manufacturer – Maruti.
The competition among the Datsun Go and Alto K10 is neck to neck and it is really hard to pick a winner. The Datsun Go is a very practical and good looking car and tries to offer everything at this price point looks really tempting. One thing that works clearly in benefit of the Datsun Go is its large dimensions which give it the ‘big car looks’ which any other car at this price point does not offer.
