With about 50% share in its kitty, the entry-level hatchback segment in India accounts for largest number of sales. It would not be wrong to say that what keep many manufacturers from trying is the small operating margins. However, Datsun it trying to get a share with its Redi Go. The bookings for Redi Go have already begun and it goes against the top selling cars of this segment like the Alto, Eon, Kwid etc. Let’s see how the upcoming Datsun Redi Go fares against the Hyundai Eon. Let's compare Datsun Redi Go Vs Hyundai Eon
Datsun Redi Go Vs Hyundai Eon (Design and Exteriors)
The upcoming Datsun Redi Go would get the standard Datsun grille as we have already seen on the Go and Go+ MPV. The sheet metal body looks elegant, and the creases around the doors and rear accentuate the overall looks. Overall the car looks youthful and exciting. The tall stance does help improve the overall design and appeal. Datsun would most certainly bestow the Redi Go with all features that you would expect from an entry-level hatchback. However, chances are that the design of the car would change considerably before the car hits production since we have only see the concept car pictures so far.

Hyundai Eon utilises the company’s fluidic design language. It bears stretched out headlamps at the front, and tall and big taillights at the back, the style has grown on us. Although the car does look premium, the styling seems somewhat over done. The Redi Go seems more pleasing and mature to look at in comparison to the Eon. There's no accounting for taste, and you could like the Eon for equally good, other compelling reasons.
Datsun Redi Go Vs Hyundai Eon (Interiors and Features)
Although the official dimensions for Datsun Redi Go have not yet been released, we expect it to be definitely as spacious as the Hyundai Eon, if not more. The cabin of the Redi Go also appears to be extraordinary as we expect the upholstery to be done with fine quality fabric and have good finish. The dashboard has been retained from the Go hatchback and looks quite modern.
Similarly, Hyundai Eon also has a good fit and finish which has helped the car do extremely well in the segment so far. Comparatively speaking, space is expected to be a major selling point for Datsun Redi Go.
Datsun Redi Go Vs Hyundai Eon (Engine, Gearbox and Transmission)
Datsun Redi Go will have a capacity of 800cc that will be powered by a 3 cylinder petrol engine. The Redi Go is based on the Renault Kwid platform and the engine is also sourced from there. This leads us to believe that the car should have a power of around 50bhp with a torque close to 100Nm, similar to the Kwid.
|Engine Gearbox and Transmission||Datsun Redi Go||Hyundai Eon|
|Engine Capacity||0.8 litre (P)||0.8 litre P / 0.8 litre (P + CNG) / 1.0 litre (P)|
|Gearbox||5 MT||5 MT|
|Power||53bhp||56 PS @ 5500 rpm / 69 PS @ 6200|
|Torque||72Nm@4386rpm||204 Nm @ 2000-2750 rpm|
Hyundai Eon also has a 3 cylinder engine and the car is driven by an 814cc engine. This engine makes the power capability of the Eon 55.2bhp at 5,500rpm and the top torque produced is 74.56Nm at 4,000 revs per minute.Transmission is the same as both the cars come mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox.Additionally, Hyundai Eon is also offered with 1.0Kappa engine which increases the power to 68.5bhp and produces a top torque of 94.14Nm at 3500rpm.
The LPG variant of Hyundai Eon has an 814cc engine and produces a power of 55.2bhp. We expect Datsun Redi-Go to also have a LPG/CNG variant.
Datsun Redi Go Vs Hyundai Eon (Mileage and Safety features)
The entry level hatchback segment loves cars that can actually stay true to their mileage offerings and this is what actually helps the current hot sellers stand tall. We hope Datsun Redi Go will live up to this requirement with an expected mileage between 20- 23kmpl. Hyundai Eon offers a decent mileage of 20.3kmpl with the Kappa engine and a figure of 21.1kmpl with the 814cc engine. The fuel costs are further reduced with the LPG variant offering a mileage of about 21.1km/kg.
Coming to safety features, Datsun is expected to equipthe Redi Go with some suave features but to keep the costs low, some features like ABS and Airbags are expected to be made available in the top trim only. Hyundai Eon also doesn’t offer many features in the base variant but the Eon Sportz comes equipped with a driver airbag and front fog lamps which is also an available feature on the Magna+ (O).
Hyundai Eon has been having quite a successful run in the market but the entry of Datsun Redi Go will definitely intensify the competition in this segment. We expect the Redi Go to do well in many aspects but if the car can really match up to the expectations and take a lead in this competition is something we will have to just wait and watch.
