The Indian car market has come a long way and is witnessing a dramatic change. The crossover segment is evolving very rapidly and the latest entrant in this segment is the i20 Active. The crossover would provide the SUV like ‘Go Anywhere’ experience in a very small car. The segment failed to make a mark in the past and failed to sell in huge numbers.
The i20 Active competes with the cars like Fiat Avventura, Volkswagen Polo Cross and Toyota Etios cross in this segment. We do a specification comparison of the car with the Fiat Avventura and see how they fare against each other.
The specification comparison sheet has been prepared by comparing the Fiat Avventura Emotion (Diesel) with the Hyundai i20 Active 1.4 SX (Diesel) and Fiat Avventura Dynamic (Petrol) with the Hyundai i20 Active 1.2 S (Petrol).
Fiat Avventura Vs Hyundai i20 Active (Design and Exteriors)
The Fiat Avventura has been derived from the Fiat Punto Evo and the Hyundai i20 Active from the latest Hyundai i20. The cars are essentially hatchbacks on steroids and the silhouette of the cars has not been modified drastically. The changes made to the Avventura are not only cosmetic, the Fiat has redesigned the nose extensively. The ground clearance of the car has been increased to 205mm from 185mm which gives it ‘Go Anywhere’ capability.
At the rear, the car carries a bracket which houses the spare wheel which makes the car look like a small SUV. The roofrails are sturdy and are made of aluminium and are not only an aesthetic feature and can be purposely used. There are plastic claddings on the side and skid plates to further enhance the utility of the car.
The height of coil springs on the i20 Active has been increased and the ground clearance of has been increased to 190mm which is less than Avventura. The car is visibly different than the i20 and carries a redesigned bumper at the front and rear. The side of the car has plastic moulding and cladding. Roof rails at the top, projector headlamps and LED DRLs at the front help make the car look distinctively different than the Hyundai i20. The car also carries alloy wheels which are chunkier. The beefier looking bumper at the rear houses twin round brake lights which further aids the car and provides it a distinct look.
Fiat Avventura Vs Hyundai i20 Active (Interiors and Features)
The interiors of the Fiat Avventura get two tone, gray and black finish unlike the Fiat Punto which gets all black interiors on top variants. There are additional features like tilt meter and digital compass which are not present on the Punto. There are no changes in the design of the interiors.
The top diesel variant of the car gets all features like the CD/MP3 player with bluetooth, USB and Aux-in along with steering mounted controls and climate control. The top petrol variant, however, does not offer bluetooth connectivity and the steering mounted controls and automatic climate control are missing too.
The i20 Active just like the i20 Elite has all features and is very well equipped. The car offers aluminum pedals which make the car look very sporty. The interiors of the car have been modified too, the lighter exterior shades sport a dual tone black and blue interior with blue inserts on the door trims and blue seats. The darker exterior shades like brown and red get an all-black dashboard with orange inserts on the gear knob, AC vents, music system, and seats.
Fiat Avventura Vs Hyundai i20 Active (Engine and Transmission)

The 3-Point ELR seat belts come as standard on all variants. Other safety features that you get are automatic door lock, central door locking, door open indicator, fire prevention system and immobilizer with rolling code.
The brakes on the i20 active remain unchanged, there are disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The top petrol and diesel variants of the i20 Active are equally well equipped and carry all essential equipment like the ABS, airbags, ELR seatbelts, park assist with rear camera, central door locking, power door locks, engine immobilizer etc.
Cars like Hyundai i20 Active and Fiat Avventura are for people who want SUV like ‘Go Anywhere’ capability in a small sized car. The i20 Active clearly outshines others in its class in term of the equipment level that it offers.
It cannot be argued that the changes made to the cars from which these cars have been derived is more or less cosmetic. However, the suspension setup on the Avventura is the best and it offers the ground clearance that matches the best of the cars in the SUV segment, along with this, the car drives well and least amount of body roll.
We consider Fiat Avventura to be the best derived crossover car in its class and an absolute winner in every respect.
