Compare Ford EcoSport Vs Mahindra Thar

Ford EcoSport was first showcased at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo and it gained an instant and overwhelming response from the buyers. Contemporary styling and design of this SUV reflects its outgoing personality. While EcoSport looks friendly, Mahindra Thar is strong and rugged. Mahindra Thar is built to satisfy the needs of a true off-roader. Let’s analyse different aspects to figure out the differences and similarities between the two SUVs.

Ford EcoSport Vs Mahindra Thar (Design and Exteriors)

EcoSport and Thar are two totally different looking cars and while one might love EcoSport’s creases and designing, others might enjoy Thar’s retro and bold looks more. Ford EcoSport has a very sporty look thanks to the prominent wheel arches. 

It has a distinct octagonal grille, mounted bumper sweeping towards headlights, ORVMs with integrated blinkers, crease over the bonnet. The tail lamps are very neatly designed and the build quality is robust. The spare wheel is affixed at its rear which brings out the true SUV personality.

Mahindra Thar has a sturdy and bold look to it. The vehicle comes with a strong and very imposing set of wheels. It has a classy round shaped headlight cluster along with the radiator grille. The bonnet has a flat surface along with curvy edges.

The front bumper of Thar helps the SUV in avoiding bushes, rocks and other obstacles. The rectangular glass mounted in the frame at front, is hinged and can be dropped onto the bonnet.  Also, the roof has the option of being retracted.

Ford EcoSport Vs Mahindra Thar (Interiors and Features)

Interiors of the cars also vary as Ford EcoSport is dipped in the essence of modern styling and Thar is very basic and built to serve the off-roaders. Ecosport has high mounted seating arrangement which provides a great visibility.

However, the thick A-Pillar creates a large blind spot for some. The dashboard along with slightly modified instrument console, stereo system controls and climate control unit are some features that make it distinct from Thar.

Mahindra Thar has interiors that are very bare and basic. The reason is that it hasn’t been designed to give you luxuries, but for you to enjoy off-roading in comfort. It now comes with the option of AC as well.

The features are very minimal but there are cup-holders at the front, a glove compartment, electronic tripmeter, low-fuel warning lamp, tachometer, speedometer and an odometer added for your convenience.

Ford EcoSport Vs Mahindra Thar (Engine, Gearbox and Transmission) 

Ford EcoSport is one car that will spoil you with its engine options. The Ford EcoSport is available with three engine options. First being the petrol 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder EcoBoost which produces 125PS of peak power at 6000rpm and 170Nm of peak torque at 1400-4500rpm. The other option in petrol is a 1.5-litre Ti VCT which churns out a maximum power of 112PS at 6300rpm and 140Nm of peak torque at 4400rpm. There is one diesel option 1.5-litre DV5 engine which outshines for its torque producing efficiency but the power figures aren’t very impressive. It produces a maximum power of 91PS at 3750rpm and a torque of 204Nm at 2000-2750rpm. The EcoBoost petrol engine and 1.5-litre DV5 diesel engine are mated with a five-speed manual transmission. Only 1.5-litre Ti VCT petrol engine is available with both five-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission options.

Thar on the other hand offers two diesel variants only. The top variant of Thar gets its power from a 2.5-litre CRDE diesel engine that produces 106.45PS of power and 247Nm of torque. The power is delivered through a 5-speed manual gearbox. The base variant and the mid-range trim are equipped with a 2.5-litre MDI 320TC L diesel engine which is a four cylinder mill and can churn out 63.87PS in combination with a pounding torque of 182.5Nm between just 1500 to 1800rpm. The drive-by-wire technology ensures quicker and controlled throttle response. Thar’s distinguishing feature is that 4X4 variants comes with BorgWarner 4WD system as a standard fitment. 

Ford EcoSport Vs Mahindra Thar (Mileage and Safety features)

In terms of fuel efficiency, the cars do not vary much and end up offering similar averages. Ford EcoSport’s 1.0-litre, 3 cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine delivers a mileage of 15.30kmpl on urban roads and 18.90kmpl on highways. The other petrol engine which is the 1.5-litre Ti VCT motor, offers a fuel efficiency of 13.07kmpl and 16.15kmpl in city and on highway respectively. The 1.5-litre DV5 diesel engine delivers a mileage of 19.30kmpl in city and 22.70kmpl on highway, and this is undoubtedly the best in this segment. The base and mid variant of Mahindra Thar has a MDI 3200TC L engine that can give away a maximum mileage of 12kmpl for the 4x2 version while it is 10kmpl for 4x4 version approximately. The top variant CRDe engine can give a peak mileage of 11kmpl.

When it comes to safety features, EcoSport is a clear winner as it incorporates ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) in mid to top variants. Other active and passive safety features in the SUV include six airbags, seat belts for all passengers, ESP (Electronic Stability Program), central lock system, SYNC for emergency alerts and many more. Rear parking sensors are also featured but only in the top variant. And Mahindra Thar on the other hand, is not equipped with many safety features it includes just certain basic features like seatbelts, 9-inch boosters with disc brakes and turn indicators. It is built with a ladder frame chassis which makes it capable of withstanding any obstruction on any terrain.

Verdict

Ford EcoSport is a very fine SUV in terms of design, engine and the overall equipment level that it offers. It is a practical SUV and offers the best mileage in its segment. For those who demand affordability with quality, Ford EcoSport is the choice. And for the segment of customers who want a thoroughbred SUV, Mahindra Thar is a good option. Other than that, the car is seriously under equipped in certain areas and is not as practical as the Ford EcoSport.
