The premium sedan market in India is one of the most attractive segments in the Indian automobile world at the moment. In fact all the major automakers are involved in the same with their best of engineering, including names like Ford, Skoda, Honda, Hyundai, Tata etc. Ford and Skoda have been doing quite well in terms of sales although Honda City and Hyundai Verna still remain the top selling cars in the segment. But it is always going to be a fascinating battle when we take two really good products like Skoda Rapid and Ford Fiesta. Read on for a detailed comparative review.
Design and Exteriors
Skoda Rapid is lean and mean machine that is quite dynamic and edgy in its design featuring a beautiful radiator grille that has the company logo embossed on it. There is a black glossy finish over the grill which is part of the 'Black Package' feature that Skoda has adopted for the exterior of the sedan. The black finish can even be seen for the large headlight cluster of the front fascia. The 15 inch alloy wheels look stunning as well on the car from the side as you also get to witness strong character lines for the side profile.
Ford Fiesta on the other hand is a lot more sporty in its looks when compared to Skoda Rapid with an aerodynamic structure right from the front fascia to the rear profile and is made to cut wind at high speed. The brand new radiator grille has a hexagonal shape that seems more attractive than what it used to before, while the chrome inserts further accentuates that effect. There is a headlight cluster around the grille that has been designed beautifully with twin chambered bright reflector lamps. The side profile is magnificent as well with body colored door handles and ORVMs that are electrically adjustable.
Interiors and Features
Skoda Rapid is very comfortable from the inside and spacious with a boot space of 460 litre while there is ample legroom and shoulder space as well. The upholstery for the entire cabin uses dual tone Mocca/Ivory front dashboard and door panels, Mocca centre console, Ivory upholstery. The glove compartment has plenty of storage space as well while there is chrome decor for front centre console, gear-shift selector, locking button of hand-brake. Other than that we also find multimedia system, AUX-in, USB port etc that keeps the passengers entertained.
Just like Skoda Rapid, Ford Fiesta is quite roomy as well from the inside as the sedan gets a dual tone theme of charcoal black and light earth grey that works brilliantly with the chrome inserts and accentuates the visual appeal. The centre console system garners metallic paint while the door handles inside and the chrome finished gear shift knob also looks quite elegant. The dashboard looks glorious as well and is incorporated with AC vents while the instrument panel looks very stylish featuring digital trip meter and door ajar warning lamp.
Engine, Gearbox and Transmission
Skoda Rapid gives options for both petrol and diesel variants in both automatic and manual trims. The petrol variant of Skoda Rapid uses the 1.6 litre MPI petrol engine garners the in-line liquid cooling system and has a displacement of 1598 cc churning out 105 PS power at 5250 rpm and 153 Nm torque at 3800 rpm. For the petrol variant there is the 5 speed manual gearbox and a 6 speed automatic gearbox. The diesel variant of Skoda Rapid comes with a 1.5 litre TDI CR turbocharged engine with the same in-line engine cooling system technology with four cylinders under its belt. Displacement for the engine is 1498 cc delivering the same 105 PS power while the torque is enhanced to 250 Nm at 1500 to 2500 rpm. Here we see the engine getting the option of working with a 5 speed manual gearbox or a 7 speed automatic gearbox.

Ford Fiesta does not offer any petrol variant which is a drawback for anyone who prefers the fuel. There are three trims for the singular diesel variant that uses the 1.5 litre TDCi engine that works with four cylinder in-line 8V DOHC technology as well. The displacement for the diesel engine is same as Skoda Rapid at 1498cc.Power generated by Ford Fiesta is 91 PS at 3750 rpm while torque carved away is 204 Nm at 2000 to 2750 rpm. There is no option of automatic gearbox Ford Fiesta which is another feature that Skoda Rapid does provide as all trims of Ford Fiesta work with the 5 speed manual transmission system.
Mileage and Safety features
Skoda Rapid gives a fuel economy of 15 kmpl with manual gearbox petrol variant while for the automatic version of the same, the mileage decreases to 14.3 kmpl. The diesel version of Skoda Rapid is far more economical with a mileage of 21.14 kmpl for manual gearbox and 21.66 kmpl for the automatic version. Ford Fiesta does not have a petrol version but its diesel variant promises a fantastic combined mileage of 25.01 kmpl.

Skoda has done wonderfully well to make sure that its safety features are well in place including the remote control locking and unlocking of doors and boot lid, parktronic feature that comes with rear park distance control mechanism, Anti-lock braking system that are available for Ambition, Elegance and Elegance Plus variants. Apart from this, the car also gets height adjustable head restraints for front and rear seats, anti glare interior rear view mirror, high level LED third brake light etc. There are plenty of safety elements with Ford Fiesta on the other hand as well including driver and passenger side airbags with Ambiente having only the former. There is also the antilock braking system with electronic brake distribution system, central locking, energy absorbing bumpers and crumple zones, door enforcements, child lock and engine immobilizer etc. across the Fiesta range.
Ford Fiesta definitely has a hold over Skoda Rapid when it comes to looks, offering more dynamic and edgy appearance. However Skoda Rapid provides a lot more alternatives to choose from in terms of price, engine specifications and engine type, which is something that Ford Fiesta lacks. For the diesel trims, Ford Fiesta manages to overtake Skoda Rapid as the more fuel efficient car. So things are pretty much at par with both the sedans and it is really up to the buyer and his preferences.
