The Hyundai stopped the production of one of its best selling hatchback – Santro. It was the car with which Hyundai entered into the Indian market and did exceptionally well. Although there are several available options of hatchbacks to choose from, the choice is not easy considering the fact that many hatchbacks come from manufacturers that do not have a well established service network as yet and the running cost of these cars is high enough to burn a hole in the buyers' pocket. In fact, running cost is one of the most important factor that buyers have in mind while they purchase a car.

In our comparison, we compare the entry level premium hatchbacks - Hyundai i10 and Maruti Suzuki WagonR.

The specification comparison sheet has been prepared by comparing Hyundai i10 Sportz (Petrol) with the Maruti Suzuki WagonR VXi.

Hyundai i10 Vs Maruti Suzuki WagonR (Design and Exterior)

The i10 certainly has a sort of style that may polarize people and it may not work well for all. It has quite been sometime since the i10 was launched, the car has done extremely well because of Hyundai’s service network. Hyundai i10 is indeed a very accomplished product which explains why it has been the default choice of car buyers in this segment.

However, the car now looks aged and needs a major makeover to woo buyers who may otherwise go for more stylish and fresh looking cars.

The original WagonR was one of the top selling car models from the Maruti family. The WagonR received a makeover only recently and now comes equipped with sporty fog lamps, narrower front grille coupled with large bumpers and wider airdam, a single horizontal chrome strip at the front with large blue tinted headlights and other cosmetic modifications. The car looks fresh in comparison to the i10. Despite the changes that have been done, the car could not get rid of its boxy looks.

Hyundai i10 interior Vs Maruti Suzuki WagonR (Interior and Features)

The cabin space and quality of the plastics used in the car are some of the strong points of the Hyundai i10. The space on the inside of the car is good too. Tall adults and three average sized people can sit comfortably in the i10.The car has offers a decent 225 litre boot space.

The buttons and the console look terrific with a blue backlighting. The air-con rotary knobs feel and work just fine. The well gear lever gives good amount of space between the front two passengers. There are two cup-holders and cubby holes in front and rear of the hand-brake. Space at the back seat is decent too and can carry average sized adults in comfort.

WagonR's interiors in comparison look boxy, they are functional though. All switches and controls in the right place and easy to operate. The i10 is a clear winner in this department.

Hyundai i10 Vs Maruti Suzuki WagonR (Engine and Transmission)

The Hyundai i10 comes with a 1.1-litre iRDE2 (intelligent Responsive Drive Engine) which makes a maximum power of 69PS at 5500rpm and 99.04Nm of torque at 4500rpm. The engine delivers great performance and is one of the most efficient engine in its class. The engine comes coupled with a 5 speed gearbox.

The new WagonR comes with a light-weight 1.0-litre petrol engine that produces a peak power of 68PS of power at 6200rpm and 90Nm of torque at 3200rpm. This engine is mated with a 5-speed manual.

Hyundai i10 Vs Maruti Suzuki WagonR (Safety features and Mileage)

The Hyundai i10 comes with ventilated disc brakes on the front and drum brakes on the rear wheels. The car also comes with central locking, seat belts, child safety locks and front fog lamps.

On the WagonR too the front brakes are ventilated discs and rear brakes are drums. The top end variant comes with ABS is certainly a better vehicle in terms of safety, as it prevents the wheels from locking-up during sudden braking conditions. Also, WagonR offers halogen headlamps, fog lamps, front and rear seat belts, child proof rear door locks, high-mounted stop lamp, warning lamp and driver side airbag.

The i10 does not comes with ABS and driver airbag which the WagonR offers.

The WagonR comes with a comparatively smaller capacity engine and offers slightly better fuel efficiency. The Hyundai i10 delivers 19.81kmpl on the highway and 16.4kmpl in the city. The WagonR offers 20.51kmpl on the highway and 17.08kmpl in the city.

You cannot go wrong with any of these cars since both the manufacturers are well established and have wide spread sales and service network. Moreover, the i10 and WagonR are accomplished products and have been in the market from many years. Considering the fact that the engines that these cars come with offer almost similar performance and mileage figures, it may eventually come down to aesthetics and the buyer may prefer looks of one car over the other.

However, as similar as these cars may be in terms of performance and overall equipment level, the WagonR clearly stands out in terms of safety equipment (Airbag and ABS) and has a clear advantage over the i10
