Whether it is the compact SUV or a fully grown one, SUVs have always found favour with Indian buyers. Compact SUVs are the new hatchbacks, and they are dominating the India car scene from quite some time. One of the first in the compact SUV segment was the EcoSport while the freshest entrant include Mahindra TUV300. It was only expected that Maruti would make to further delay to make most of the thriving market and would launch the Vitara Brezza. With Maruti Brezza, the competition is bound to get tough and the choice even more difficult. Read on as we evaluate the upcoming Vitara, newly launched TUV300 and one of the pioneers, EcoSport.

​Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza was very well appreciated at the time of Auto Expo 2016. The car looks understated yet elegant. It is inspired by its bigger sibling, the Grand Vitara. Mahindra TUV300 on the other hand looks a lot more rugged and robust. Infact the TUV300 is the only car that uses the body-on-frame architecture. All other cars use the monocoque construction. The TUV300 is a squarish design, and looks as if has been designed using a ruler. Square fog lamps, prominent character lines, and tall stance make the car look very butch. Ford Ecosport looks the most unconventional of the lot. Still it's easy on the eyes, comes equipped with beautiful set of alloy wheels much like the competitiors that enhance the appearance of the car. The EcoSport also offers the best ground clearance of 200mm that provides it 'Go Anywhere' capability.​

Vitara Brezza Vs TUV300 Vs EcoSport (Interiors and Features)

The Vitara Brezza uses new style cues for the ineriors and upholstery used feels plush. There is enough space inside the cabin to keep the passengers comfortable on long drives. The Mahindra TUV300 has to be one of the best Mahindra yet in terms of fit and finish and quality of interiors, it uses a beige and black scheme which provides a sense of airiness to the cabin. While Mahindra TUV300 and MarutiBrezza are more conventional in terms of design used for interiors, Ford EcoSport, features a very trendy dashboard and console system that it borrows from the Fiesta. There is the popular SYNC system as well that delivers value for entertainment and connectivity. However, in terms of space, Ford EcoSport falls short of the other two SUVs.

Vitara Brezza Vs TUV300 Vs EcoSport (Engine, Gearbox and Transmission)

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza offers only one engine option. The diesel unit uses a 5-speed manual gearbox that develops 88bhp and a maximum torque of 200Nm. The Mahindra TUV300 on the other hand comes offers a larger 3-cylinder 1.5-litre mHawk diesel that develops close to 80bhp of power. There's an option of five speed manual and AMT transmission to choose from. The engine of the TUV300 offers the most amount of torque (230Nm) among competitiors, coming at around 1500rpm, provides the car immense driveability.

Ford EcoSport offers three engines (two petrol and one diesel) to choose from and is perhaps the most versatile of all. The diesel motor churns out 98bhp of power and 205Nm of torque, whereas the petrol motor carves away 123bhp power and 170Nm torque. Both the engines have the option of 5-speed manual transmission system while the petrol motor gets an alternative of automatic gearbox as well.

Vitara Brezza Vs TUV300 Vs EcoSport (Mileage and Safety features)

Maruti cars are famous for the impressive fuel economy, the Vitara Brezza does not disappoint, and is the most fuel efficient car of the lot, offering 24.3kmpl. There are plenty of safety features available with the car including ABS, front airbags, EBD, seat belt Pre-tensioners etc. It also offers driver airbag as standard across all variants. The Mahindra TUV returns a mileage of around 18.9kmpl. The compact SUV comes with dual airbags, ABS and EBD that enhance the safety features of the car. Ford Ecosport 1.5-litre petrol offers 15.86kmpl mileage while the fuel economy increases further for diesel variant at 22.27kmpl. The EcoBoost 1.0 litre offers 18.88kmpl which is indeed impressive considering the power (123bhp) it produces. With features like Hill start assist, EBD, reverse parking sensors, EcoSport is perhaps the most well equipped car in terms of safety features.


The TUV300 is a truly tough SUV. It uses the ladder-on-frame construction along with a rear-wheel drive system that adds to its utility appeal. The fact that you also get AMT along with a manual gearbox, also makes the TUV300 overall package quite attractive. The EcoSport is a perfect urban SUV and also the best equipped car of the lot with most number of engines on offer. The Vitara Brezza is the most fuel-efficient and comes across as an attractive package, though lack of automatic transmission and option of petrol somewhat limits its appeal. Each car is indeed a curate's egg here, with no clear winner.
