The compact SUV segment is the perhaps the hottest in India and sees as healthy sales as the compact hatchback segment. This stands especially true in case of the manufacturers like the Ford and Renault who have given us the Ecosport and Duster respectively. There are other SUVs that may not have sold well like the ones that we mentioned before but they are essentially decent cars.
We compare the specifications of two of such cars – Mahindra Quanto and Premier Rio, and find out which one is better. The specification sheet has been prepared by comparing Mahindra Quanto C8 with the Premier Rio Diesel CRDi4. Compare full features Mahindra Quanto Vs Premier Rio.
Mahindra Quanto exteriors Vs Premier Rio exteriors
Mahindra Quanto is based on the Mahindra Xylo, the features of the car from the side and front look essentially like the Xylo. The front fascia looks very masculine and it has a very bold looking, wide radiator grille with vertical slats. The bumper at the front has horizontal slats and is black colored. On the sides, you will notice 15inch alloy wheels and pronounced wheel arches which further enhance the aggressive looks of the car. Body colored, electrically controlled ORVMs makes the car look sophisticated. On the rear, you will find a spare wheel mounted to the tail gate, Quanto looks chopped from the rear end and reveals the afterthought that was put to derive the car.
The Premier Rio is a comparatively soft looking compact SUV. The car stands tall at 2420mm and provides ample ground clearance too 200mm. The car in comparison to most of the SUVs looks snug and urbane. The front carries stylish headlamps with not-so-well-known Premier logo along with grille in between. The sides bears chunky looking alloys under sharp wheel arches. On the sides, you would also notice, ORVMs with integrated indicators and old style door handles that complete the look of the car. The rear adorns spare wheel which makes it look completely rugged and sturdy.
Mahindra Quanto interiors Vs Premier Rio interiors
Mahindra Quanto can seat 7 persons in three rows, unlike the Rio which is a 5 seater. The cabin of Mahindra Quanto is spacious, the interiors are beige and brown which helps improves the ambience. The interiors feel well-built but the plastics are tacky and lack the premium feel. In terms of equipment, you get Digital Drive Assist system which provides the useful information like date and time, inside/outside temperature, instant mileage etc. To enhance the comfort, there are foldable armrests at front and reclining seats in the second row, bottle holders, foldable eating tray at rear, under seat storage area etc. For entertainment, the car includes two DIN audio system with four speakers.
The interiors of Premier Rio are decent and function well but there is nothing inspiring about them in terms of style. You get features like adjustable front seat head restraints, adjustable rear seat head restraints, front door trim pockets, digital clock, glove box, and console with cup holder etc. For entertainment, the car is equipped with a CD/Radio player and four speakers.

This Quanto carries a 1.5 litre CRDi engine (1493cc) under its hood. This can generate a maximum power of 100bhp at 3750rpm and a peak torque of 240Nm at 1600rpm. The power is delivered to the wheels by a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The Rio on the other hand, uses a 1.3 litre (1248cc) CRDi engine that can generate a maximum power of 72bhp at 4000rpm. The maximum torque that can be produced is an impressive 183Nm at 1800-2400rpm. The transmission type is manual which comes equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The Rio is also available with a 1.5 litre diesel engine which is BS III complaint and 1.2 litre petrol engine which is BS IV complaint as the 1.3 litre CRDi engine that we mentioned above in the comparison. Whereas the Mahindra Quanto is only available with a 1.5 litre CRDi engine.
Mahindra Quanto mileage Vs Premier Rio mileage
The Quanto promises to deliver 13.8kmpl in the city and 17.21kmpl on highways. Whereas the Rio should be able to deliver an impressive 23.75kmpl on highways and 20kmpl in the city.
Mahindra Quanto safety features Vs Premier Rio safety features
The Quanto is reasonably well equipped and offers disc brakes at front and drum brakes at rear. You also get driver and passenger airbags, ABS with EBD and park assist features.
The Premier Rio does not offer airbags which is disappointing. However, it is very well equipped too and in the top variant, you get ABS with EBD, Brake assist, 3 point ELR seat belts for the front passengers, seat belts for rear passengers, keyless entry, child safety locks etc.
The Premier Rio would offer you the exclusivity that very cars can match today, along with that; it has to offer impressive fuel economy, good road presence, high ground clearance. On the other hand, we have Mahindra Quanto which is an equally good car but what is the most compelling reason to buy Quanto is the service backup that comes with the brand Mahindra which the Premier cannot match as yet.
