The ever expanding MPV segment in India has seen yet another entrant in the form of Renault Lodgy. With the Lodgy, Renault hopes to be successful the way it did with the Duster. A lot has changed in between years and perhaps the most significant change has been in the way the underlying engineering effort has been put to use in making the cars. The construction method for manufacturing cars along with underlying technology has changed tremendously too.
Unlike the Innova, which uses a comparatively heavier construction, the Renault Lodgy uses Monocoque construction for its chassis which helps it shed kilos of weight and delivers better efficiency and mileage figures with a smaller engine.

Renault Lodgy Vs Toyota Innova (Design and Exterior)
The Renault Lodgy is a smart looking car. On the front, there are large sweptback headlamps that adorn the face. In the middle, you would notice, there is double slat grille with a chrome strip at the top which makes the car look premium. The bumper looks smooth and the arrangement of bottom grille with the fog lamps looks clean.
On the sides, you would notice that there are subtle creases and chunky alloys that lend the car its unique character. The taillight cluster at the back has been nicely designed and looks good in isolation. However, the rear of the car looks very bland and van like in its entirety.
The Innova, which has received several updates during its life, looks aged in comparison, standing alongside Lodgy. The car, despite its tremendous road presence lacks the oomph factor. On the front, there is a big grille that is flanked by simple and large headlamps. The side of the car is the least interesting angle to look at and you would notice that there is large glass area that should provide airy feel to the passengers.
The back of the car, there is a big boot door surrounded by triangular taillights that shine like jewels when lit at night. All-in-all, the styling of the car is understated and may appeal only to certain kind of buyers.
Renault Lodgy Vs Toyota Innova (Interior and Features)
The Renault Lodgy offers a very roomy and comfortable cabin. The MPV is offered in two seating configurations of 7 and 8-seater models to choose from. The second and third rows offer ample space and head and legroom. It gets height adjustable driver's seat, while the 7-seater offers captain seats in its second row along with armrests. However, the 7-seater configuration is available only in the RxZ model trim.
The top end model of the car uses two-tone premium fabric upholstery along with leather inserts which look classy. There’s a 3 spoke steering wheel with metal accents that has audio controls, cruise control, speed limiter, telephony controls. There are many additional features like cup and bottle holders, sun visors, storage unit, floor carpeting, power sockets, flight tray for second row of seats, door map pockets and bottle holders, There’s a MediaNav system with touch screen that takes care of entertainment, provides navigation information, provides visibility with the help of rear view camera while the car is reversed. The boot space of the car is large at 207 litres which can be increased to 1861 litres by folding the 2nd and 3rd row of seats.
The top variant of Innova comes with brown and beige interiors. The dash is of a very simple design and the built quality is good too. The Innova has ample space for the front and middle row passengers. The third row of seats is meant only for children since there is not much legroom. The top variant of the Innova gets roof-mounted air-conditioning vents for the second and third row occupants.
The boot space of the Innova is very decent at 760 litres. Folding the third row of seats is simple and easy too. In terms of utilities and equipment, you get - a touchscreen infotainment system. This in-dash system has aux-in, USB, bluetooth connectivity with six speakers. There’s a reverse parking camera for park assistance. Power windows first and second row of passengers, four spoke steering can be adjusted for rake and has audio and telephony controls mounted on it, premium floor mats, sun visors for driver and front passenger. There’s a glove box, cupholders and bins to keep the things at. In comparison to the Lodgy, the car severely lacks in the utility features that it has to offer.
Renault Lodgy Vs Toyota Innova (Engine and Transmission)
The Renault lodgy two tunes of engines – The lower power engine produces 85PS at 3750rpm of peak power and the higher power engine produces 110PS at 1750rpm. The capacity of both the engines is the same at 1461cc, the difference lies in the states of tunes that they offer and the gear box. The higher power engine uses a 6-speed manual gearbox, the lower power engine uses a 5-speed transmission to deliver power to the wheels.
Toyota Innova is available is also available with two engine options. Unlike the engines in case of Lodgy, the engines have similar power outputs in this case - 102 PS at 3600rpm. The difference lies in the torque output. The engine that produces 200 Nm of torque between 1200-3600rpm is BS IV compliant and the engine that produces 200 Nm at 1400-3400rpm is BS III compliant.
Renault Lodgy Vs Toyota Innova (Safety features and Mileage)
The Lodgy is extremely well equipped car in terms of safety features. There are disc brakes at front and drum brakes at rear. To further enhance the safety, there are airbags for the front passengers, ABS (Antilock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), BA (Brake Assist), park assistance features with rear view camera, engine immobilizer, central locking, child safety lock etc.
The Innova has powerful disc brakes at front and drum brakes at rear on duty. In addition, you get features like ABS, two airbags for front passengers, child safety locks, central locking, engine immobilizer, seat belts, park assistance rear view camera etc.
The Renault Lodgy offers an impressive mileage figure due to its lighter weight and smaller capacity engine. The higher power engine offers 19.98kmpl and the lower capacity engine would deliver 21.04kmpl. The figures are ARAI certified. The Toyota Innova would offer a mileage of 9kmpl in the city and 12.99kmpl on highways. The mileage of the car is not impressive by any standard. The body-on-frame construction and the larger capacity engine takes a toll on mileage.
The Innova has served the Indian marker for about a decade now. The car, until recently, remained a default MUV choice for buyers, but now there are more competitive cars that are better equipped and manage to offer the features in a car which looks amazingly fresh too. Toyota, to stay in this game, might need a new car and retire the ageing lion. The Lodgy emerges as a clear winner in this specification comparison.
