Tata has been in the car business for a long time now and we have gotten used to somewhat different approach that Tata follows with its products. The cars rolled out lately have been far from crude, despite this, it has only worked to some extent for the manufacturer and it still struggles putting up exceptional sales figures on the chart.
The newly launched Tiago has been positioned between the cars like Grand i10 and Ford Figo on one side, and Celerio, i10, Kwid and Alto on the other. So let’s waste no time and do a quick specification comparison of the cars and see if Tiago can change Tata's fortune.
Tata Tiago Vs Maruti Swift Vs Hyundai Grand i10 Vs Ford Figo (Design and Exterior)
The design of the Tiago is spot on and should strike a chord with prospective buyers. There’s nothing odd here, the proportions are just right. The somewhat smaller dimensions work in the car’s favour and it ends up looking appealing. The broad grille that runs from side to side is flanked by large sweptback headlamps and together they form the most striking visual feature of the car. On the sides there are character lines that break the monotony and impart the car the style it needs. The rear looks very familiar and conventional.

The Swift was a looker when it was launched and it still is, it’s just that the design has grown on us and we are so used to seeing it that it does not excite us much now. All in all, Ford Figo and Tiago look the most refreshing of the lot.
Tata Tiago Vs Maruti Swift Vs Hyundai Grand i10 Vs Ford Figo (Interiors and Features)
Tiago borrows its three spoke steering wheel and controls from the Bolt, while the central console looks inspired from the Mahindra TUV 300. You get an 8 speaker music system which has been engineered by Harman and is indeed the best in class. The system lets you use your phone as navigation device without a data connection and mirrors turn-by-turn directions on the screen. The driving modes “Eco” and “City” is other unique offering by Tiago are available with all variants.
Ford Figo offers a voice controlled SYNC system with the top variants, there’s a voice command system available with the Tiago too that lets you pair phone and stream music. Swift and Grand i10 offer steering mounted control with the top variants but skip voice command.
The black and gray scheme of interiors help increase the sense of spaciousness in the cabin and perhaps some may find it better than the black and beige scheme that most of the other manufacturers have been using. The Grand i10 excels in rear passenger comfort and is the only car that provides rear AC vents in the higher variants in this category. All black interiors present on the Swift’s as well as the Figo feel sportier.
Tata Tiago Vs Maruti Swift Vs Hyundai Grand i10 Vs Ford Figo (Engine, Transmission and Gearbox)
Tata has downsized the motors and they are not the same as the ones it uses on the Zest and Bolt. The 1.2 litre petrol uses an aluminium block and three cylinder construction which puts out 83bhp of peak power and 114Nm of torque. While the diesel uses the same three pot construction and produces 67bhp of power and 140Nm of torque. The diesel motor fails to impress altogether if you compare it with the more powerful 1.5 litre motor from Ford. But we expect it offers much better fuel efficiency than rivals. For enthusiasts, there’s a bigger 1.5 litre petrol motor on offer from Ford which produces 110bhp of power and comes with a dual clutch transmission too.

There’s no automatic on option, but we expect that Tata might offer an AMT later on. A four speed automatic gearbox is available with the 1.2 litre petrol engine of the Grand i10. The Grand i10 also offers a smaller 1 litre petrol engine that offers dual fuel capability and can also run on LPG.
All other engines offers a five speed manual transmission, the Swift skips the automatic gearbox and dual fuel options. All cars and variants use transversely mounted front engines which drive the front wheels.
Tata Tiago Vs Maruti Swift Vs Hyundai Grand i10 Vs Ford Figo (Safety)
According to Tata, Tiago would have absolutely no trouble passing the safety tests of the future that the government's planning on implementing. The top variant comes equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and Corner Stability Control.
ELR seat belts and child locks are available as standard feature with even the base variants of all these cars. Figo offers ABS with EBD, Traction control, ESP and hill hold with six airbags with the top variant and is a benchmark in this class in the safety department.
Tiago is the best offering in the hatchback segment available in the Indian market right now. This is perhaps the best looking Tata car ever and with it Tata has won half the battle. It's been priced competitvely and is a benchmark for other cars to follow. It would come as no surprise to us if the competitiors start revising the prices of their existing cars.
