Compare Tata Tigor Vs Honda Amaze Vs Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire

The Tigor is certainly a black sheep when you consider that its boot is well-integrated, unlike most of the competitors which appear truncated. Even though the compact sedan market is shrinking, due to the unique style quotient, Tata is confident that Tigor would be able to garner buyers. So is it a good package overall? We pit it against the Honda Amaze and the Maruti Swift Dzire to find out.

Design and Exteriors

Tata is marketing the Tigor as a style back and rightly so as it manages to integrate the boot very well, that looks very much a part of the car, unlike some of the competitors which make it look like an afterthought. Tigor also manages to distinguish itself from the Tiago by offering a double barrel arrangement for the headlamps and a contrasting amber indicator that finds place inside the headlamp and a more pronounced grille.

Amaze looks smart with its large almond shaped headlamps and updated taillight cluster. The boot is well-derived too and the car does not look chopped. It trails the pack in terms of ground clearance which is 5mm less than the other competitors which offer 170mm of it.

Maruti Dzire offers least amount of boot space at 316 litres and looks bulbous. The boot’s not as well integrated as the rest. Truth is; that Dzire, despite its impressive sales number, looks dated and is in dire need of an update.

Interiors and Features

You get reasonable level of safety equipment with all cars and two airbags, ABS and EBD forms part of the equipment. Even though Honda Amaze was recently updated, it still does not offer Navigation system. Overall interior quality though, in case of Amaze is much better now, and seems to have been derived from the larger, Honda City.

Tata Tigor should meet the user expectations rather well as it offers a music system from Harman, which also integrates Navigation system and display for reverse parking camera in a touch screen. You also get bigger headrests for rear passengers that should help offer better protection in an event of rear collision. Seats extend from side to side and offer sufficient space for three.

Maruti Dzire has a practical cabin with lots of storage spaces to keep the knick knacks in. Entertainment unit has support for USB and Bluetooth. It plays music through a set of four speakers and two tweeters. While you do get safety features like ABS, EBD and two airbags with top variants ZDi and ZXi, you can also opt them on the base variants.

Engine and Transmission

Since it’s priced much more competitively, you may forgive Tigor for its three cylinder motors that develop respectable power like its four cylinder counterparts. However Tigor petrol, unlike the Tiago petrol uses a counter balancer shaft that manages to keep vibration in control.

Tigor petrol sits right in the middle with 85bhp of power; Amaze and Dzire develop 87bhp and 83bhp respectively. Tigor diesel develops 70bhp of power while Dzire puts out 74bhp. Amaze’s diesel is particularly powerful at 99bhp and torque of 200Nm.

Tigor offers a 5 speed manual transmission with the petrol, it's expected that AMT would be offered later. Amaze gets CVT petrol alongside 5 speed manual transmission. Dzire offers a choice of automatic transmission with diesel as well as petrol.

The Tigor has a lot going for it, and it is indeed the best package of the lot if you are not willing to compromise on style. Tigor offers great value and is a car that you should consider if you are a first time buyer or planning to upgrade from hatch.

However, it’s not without its flaws. The diesel engine is least powerful of the lot and powers a car that’s relatively heavier too, and it’s the chink in its armour. Petrol however makes a strong case against the competitors.
