Toyota has not given up on India yet. Innova Crysta, updated Etios range and the new Fortuner launched just a couple of days back is a sign of that. The big and curvier Fortuner is miles ahead of the car it replaces. But is it good enough to grab the top spot and has it got what it takes to be the perfect SUV in this space. We compare it with the rivals and find out.
Design and Exteriors
Toyota would is no longer make boring cars, the promise has been truly delivered by Akio Toyoda. The Fortuner 2016 looks every bit modern and is not boring by any means.
It would be unfair to pick one in terms of style. And in their own right, each has a right mix of characteristics that make some of them look brawnier than the others or suave than the rest. The Santa Fe is clearly on the other side of the scale and has perhaps least butch. It’s nonetheless has great road presence and looks ultra modern and most urban.
All cars use a ladder-on-frame with body on top, with the only exception of Santa Fe that uses a monocoque construction. It also offers least amount of ground clearance at 185mm and is definitely the most compact if you consider the overall dimensions.

Interior and Features
All cars offer a rich experience on the inside and come loaded with features. The Fortuner offers 7 airbags and include other safety features like Hill Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, ABS and EBD making it one of the best car in this category. Santa Fe offers 6 airbags along with other safety features and looks most modern on the inside. Other features finding way into the Santa Fe's cabin include ATCC (advanced traction cornering control),cruise control, automatic headlamps, 8.0 inch touchscreen navigation system with voice assist and rear manual curtains.
The Chevrolet Trailblazer offers all the essential safety features like Traction control, Panic Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Hill Assist etc, however, it only offers two front airbags for passenger safety. The Endeavour offers seven airbags with the top variant along with other safety features as present in other cars. Some of the features like steering mounted controls, power adjustment for ORVMs, height adjustable seat belts etc. are present in all cars.
Engine and Transmission
The petrol engine option is first in this segment and Fortuner offers it with an automatic 6-speed transmission and manual variants. However, there's no option of four wheel drive with this motor. Though Santa Fe's engine has a capacity of only 2.2 litre, it makes an impressive 197Ps of power and is as powerful as the bigger 3.2 litre motor of the Endeavour that makes 200Ps. Even the Trailblazer, that offers only one engine option - 2.8 litre diesel, manages to produce 200Ps of power, it also produces the most amount of torque at 500Nm.
Endeavour also offers a 2.2 litre diesel motor that develops 160Ps of power and 385Nm of torque. You also get an option of 6-speed automatic with the motor and a 4X4 transmission.

Priced at around Rs 30 Lakh ex-showroom Delhi, the Ford Endeavour is the best proposition of the lot. It offers a capable and powerful engine option, and comes loaded with all the bells and whistles. The Fortuner comes quite close and takes the second spot.
