Volkswagen Polo Vs Hyundai i20 Elite (Design and Exterior)

The Volkswagen Polo which is undisputedly a very pleasing car to look at and makes a statement with its well defined pleasing lines. It looks sleek and has understated style which is unmatched by any other car in this segment and is a defining feature of all Volkswagen cars. The i20 on the other hand looks much fresh standing alongside Polo and is an immediate eye-grabber due its distinctive styling and comparatively larger proportions.

The new i20 has a longer wheel base and is wider than the Polo. The proportionately larger dimensions of the car make a case of their own and look a class apart in comparison to Polo.  The longer wheelbase and wider track further aid in increasing the space inside the car. Both the cars use chrome accents and pronounce the features to some extent. The looks are indeed a very subjective thing and you may prefer one over the other.

Volkswagen Polo Vs Hyundai i20 Elite (Interior and Features)

The Hyundai i20 Elite with its class leading wheelbase offers the best cabin space. The interiors designed with Hyundai’s ‘Fludic Design 2.0’ philosophy are very pleasing and come in dual - black and beige tone. Its German rival too uses dual tone interiors which are closely matched by i20 in terms of aesthetics as well as build quality. The quality of plastics used in both cars is top notch.

Even with the i20’s larger dimensions it provides a boot space 285 litres of boot space which is less than the Polo which offers 280 litres of boot space.

Volkswagen Polo Vs Hyundai i20 Elite (Engine and Transmission)

The petrol engine used on Polo has three cylinders whereas the i20’s petrol motor has four. The motor on i20 offers significantly more power 83 PS @ 6000 RPM in comparison to the motor on Polo which offers 75 PS @ 5400 RPM even though both the engines are of same capacity (1197cc).

The diesel motor on the Polo offers much more torque (230 Nm @ 1500 – 2500 RPM) in comparison to the i20 (190 Nm @ 2000 RPM). The diesel motor on i20 is coupled with a 6 speed gearbox whereas in case of Polo, both the engines use a 5 speed gearbox.

Volkswagen Polo Vs Hyundai i20 Elite (Safety features and Mileage)

The cars are equipped with safety features like ABS, engine immobilizer, central locking and parking assistance features. The Park assist features help the driver to park a car into parking space with ease. The Hyundai i20 Elite offers the parking assistance feature with a rear camera and you can park the car with greater ease. The Polo does offer park assist features but there is no rear view camera.

The petrol variant of Polo offers 16.47 kmpl whereas the diesel offers 20.14 kmpl. The i20 offers better mileage in comparison, the petrol variant offers 18.6 kmpl and the diesel offers 22.54 kmpl. The mileage of Polo is the cringing point in otherwise overall good package that the car offers.

You can find full features comparison of both the cars from here.

Verdict

Hyundai has consistently improved the i20 with each iteration and with the new i20 it irons out the imperfections of the earlier version which bring the car closer to perfection in every respect. The Polo is a very fine product from Volkswagen but frankly it looks aged despite the recent facelift. The Volkswagen may want to go back to the drawing board and offer something fresh to keep itself in the race.
