The specification sheet has been prepared by comparing Vento 1.5 TDI DSG Highline with the Hyundai Verna SX 1.6 CRDi VGT (AT) and Vento 1.2 TSI DSG Highline with the Hyundai Verna SX 1.6 Petrol VTVT (AT). 

Volkswagen Vento Vs Hyundai Verna (Design and Exteriors)

The Vento received only a minor facelift that does not make it look substantially different than the outgoing car. However, to the discerning eye, the changes would be apparent. There is a new bumper, fog-lamps at the front and a triple slat chrome grille. At the back, you will notice a chrome tipped exhaust and new tail-light cluster. There is more chrome on the bumper and the tailgate which makes the car look more upmarket than before. Despite the changes, the new Vento still has an understated styling which was one of the main characteristic of the old car. 

The Hyundai Verna looks more stylish than the Vento, from whichever angle you look at it. There are projector headlamps at the front and radically designed fog lamps. The face of the car is over all more appealing. The use fluidic design philosophy is evident on the sides and the rear too. In terms of dimensions, the car matches the Vento very closely.

Electrically foldable ORVMs are found on higher variants of both the cars. The Vento uses 15inch alloy wheels on the top variants whereas the Verna comes equipped with 16inch alloys. 

Volkswagen Vento Vs Hyundai Verna (Interiors and Features)

The Vento offers features like cooled glove box, Sun-glass holder, 12V power outlet, rear parking sensors, internal fuel-lid opener, gear shift indicator (For manual transmission), flat bottom steering, central locking, height adjustable driver seat, rear defogger, instrument cluster that offers – tachometer, odometer, tripmeter and speedometer as standard across all variants.

The two top variants Highline and Comfortline offer features like CD/MP3 player with USB, Aux-in and SD car support. Bluetooth connectivity is available on the top of the line variant only. Other features like “Spacemax” seat adjustment, chrome interior accents, electrically foldable ORVMs, steering wheel controls for audio, Bluetooth, leatherette seat covering "Walnut Desert Beige" with dual tone interior theme are available on the Highline variant only. 

The Verna on the other hand offers features like ABS with EBD, digital clock, roof mounted antenna, map pockets – front and rear doors, tachometer, instrument cluster with features like – low fuel warning, door ajar warning, trunk lid open warning, seat belt reminder, clutch lock system (manual transmission), ergo lever for front passenger seat, rake steering come as standard across all variants.

Some other features like Bluetooth connectivity, 2 Din music system with 1 GB memory, cooled glove box, sun glass holder, tilt adjustable driver seat, park assistance with rear camera, rain sensing wipers, telescopic steering are present on higher variants only.

Volkswagen Vento Vs Hyundai Verna (Engine, Transmission and Gearbox)

The Vento offers three engine choices – two petrol (1.6-litre MPI & 1.2-litre TSI) and one diesel 1.5-litre TDI. The DSG automatic gearbox is available on the 1.2-litre TSI petrol and 1.5-litre TDI diesel motor only.

The 1.6 litre (1598 cc) TSI motor produces 105 PS of power at 5250 RPM and peak torque of 153Nm at 3800RPM. The 1.2 litre (1197 cc) turbocharged motor produces the same power as the normally aspirated motor at 5500 RPM but slightly better torque figures – 175Nm at 1500-4100 RPM.

The 1.5 TDI motor produces the same power at 4400 RPM. However, the torque is much higher – 250Nm at 1500-2500 RPM. The DSG automatic offers seven forward gears whereas the manual gearbox offers 5 forward gears.

The Hyundai Verna offers two petrol (1.4 litre VTVT and 1.6 litre VTVT) and two diesel engines (1.4 litre CRDI and 1.6 litre CRDI) to choose from. Four speed automatic gearbox is available with 1.6 litre diesel and 1.6 litre petrol only. The 1.6 litre (1582 cc) diesel motor is turbocharged and produces a maximum power of 128PS at 4000RPM and peak torque of 260 Nm between 1900 -2750 RPM where as the 1.6 litre petrol motor 123PS of power at 6300 RPM and torque of 156 Nm at 4200 RPM.

The 1.4 litre diesel engine produces 90 PS at 4000 RPM and peak torque of 220 Nm at 1750 – 2750 RPM. Whereas the 1.6 litre petrol motor produces 123 PS of power at 6300 RPM and 155 Nm of torque at 4200 RPM.

Volkswagen Vento Vs Hyundai Verna (Safety)

The Volkswagen Vento comes equipped with driver and passenger airbags as standard across all variants. The ABS, ESP and Hill Assist is available on Highline and Comfortline only. Rear fog lamps, height adjustable seat belts, engine immobilizer, high mounted stop lamp comes as standard on all variants too.

Hyundai Verna offers 6 airbags on the top variant whereas the ABS, EBD, Immobilizer come as standard across all variants. The rear parking sensors with camera, driver airbag, impact sensing auto door unlock, projector headlamps with escort function are available on all variants except the base.

Verdict

Both the cars offer wide range of engine options and there is no default choice when it comes to comparing cars that match so closely in terms of features. However, if you consider the safety aspect, it is the Verna that stands out and offers you overall better safety equipment level across all variants.
