Snapshot: recently concluded elections will see Vito Ippolito return for 3rdt erm as President of FIM!

The FIM, Federation of International Motorcycling or  Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme  is the global governing/sanctioning body of motorcycle racing. It represents 111 national motorcycle federations that are divided into six regional continental unions.

There are six motorcycle-racing disciplines that FIM covers, encompassing 65 world championships and prizes: road racing, motocross (including snowcross,  trials, enduro, cross-country rallies & bajas) and track racing (combining grasstrack and speedway). FIM is also involved in many non-racing activities that promote the sport, its safety, and support relevant public policy. The FIM is also the first international sporting federation to publish an Environmental Code, in 1994. In 2007, a Commission for Women in Motorcycling was created by the FIM in order to promote the use of powered two-wheelers and the motorcycle sport amongst women.

The ballots are in, and Vito Ippolito will continue as the President of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), for the next four years. Ippolito was re-relected at the FIM General Assembly held in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. With 103 national motorcycle federations taking part in the voting, Ippolito defeated rival Jorge Viegas of Portugal with 62 votes to 41.

For those who don’t know the sixty-two-year-old Venezuelan-born Ippolito, he has an impressive career in motorcycling. He was the manager of Team Venemotos, during the period their rider Carlos Lavado won the 250GP World Championships in 1983 and 1986. He was also the President of the FMV (Venezuelan Federation) from 1992 to 2006, and has been involved with duties at the FIM since 1984.

“I am extremely pleased to have been given the opportunity to continue in my role as FIM President and would like to personally thank all those who have given me their loyal support, not only today but over the past eight years,” said Ippolito after the election. He also said “I feel the FIM has achieved much in recent times, but we still have work to do and I am delighted that I will be able to steer and assist the FIM as we look towards the future and the many challenges that we still have to meet over the next four years.”
