It is yet again that time of the year when Frankfurt will host one of the most renowned and awaited motor shows around the globe. With its 66th edition coming soon, the international motor show at Frankfurt will witness plethora of unveilings, launches, concepts and prototype exhibitions from the who’s who in automotive fraternity. Starting from the 15th of September, the international motor show is all set to entertain auto enthusiasts from across the world who will be reaching the venue from far flung corners of the globe.
Among the glut of cars most of the vehicles will be released in international markets, while few of them will be routed to India in the upcoming months. Some of the prominent models that are available in Indian market or could possibly be brought to India include BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, Mercedes S-Class Luxury Coupe, Audi A4, Suzuki Baleno internally known as IK-2 (YRA), Bentley Bentagya, Ferrari 488 Spider, Jaguar F-Pace, Mini Clubman and Porsche 911.
Already popular in global markets including India, Bavarian Motor Works’ compact SUV X1 will see some significant alterations in the dimensions. This means some serious metamorphosing from the usual small size to a considerably higher SUV than what it is now. Styling cues will be taken from larger X Series siblings which will be evident on the outside.
Cabin is also likely to offer more space which implies more comfort for passengers. Even the storage space for luggage will be increased. BMW will employ petrol and diesel engines from its range of latest generation powertrains. Additionally, the SUV will also get new version of BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system and new chassis that altogether aide towards optimised fuel economy and ride quality. Besides, BMW will also exhibit facelifted versions of BMW 3 Series and BMW 7 Series. From its green thumb the company will show two new hybrid models, christened 330e rear-drive, four door saloon and 225xe.
Mercedes Benz will lift lid on the C-Class coupe that makes its European debut at Frankfurt Motor Show, while it will go on sale close to the year end. The front profile is expected to be the same as the regular C-Class model, while rear is reminiscent of S-Class coupe.
Cabin will get same set of equipments as seen in other Mercs and a couple of options will be rolled out for upholstery. Space inside the cabin is likely to be sumptuous, all thanks to the increased dimensions. Mercedes will continue with the same set of engines at the time of launch which includes a 181Bhp petrol engine and two diesel motors outputting 134Bhp and 168Bhp respectively later. There could also be a diesel hybrid option, engendering 237Bhp. As for the Indian market, there is yet no clarity as to what all motors will be put on offing. Alongside these, Merc will also bring two-door S-Class Cabriolet and new GLC coupe to the motor show.
Suzuki’s bigger version of Swift for the international market and a new B segment premium hatch for Indian market, “Baleno’ will also be a part of the show. Rumours suggest that it could be launched with a different name in India, for now, the company has started production at its Manesar plant and is expected to be launched around Diwali.
Engine specs for European market will be different than the domestic market, the Europe bound variant will get a 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder turbocharged Boosterjet engine, on the other hand India bound model will feature Fiat sourced 1.3 litre Multijet diesel engine and 1.2 litre K-Series petrol engine. Underpinning Suzuki’s new-generation platform, Baleno is supposed to be very frugal in nature. The top-end version (India-spec) is expected to feature LED DRLs, fog lights, 16 inch alloy wheels, chrome door handles, keyless entry, turn indicators on ORVMs and a sporty rear spoiler.
Audi has been wooing customer around the world, the German auto major has spilled magic in India too, among its global models, the company will bring up a new electric SUV concept christened Q6 e-tron. The all electric model will see light of the day in 2018.
One of the other models that will be up for display at the Frankfurt motor show is Audi A4, the Jaguar XE rivalling saloon is running in its fourth generation and with the latest roll out it will enter into fifth generation. Already launched in the UK market, the deliveries are likely to commence from November. An overall improvement is visible in the power generation that said the saloon now engenders 25% increased power and 21% enhanced fuel economy. The weight is lesser by 120kgs which means even better economy and alterations in dimensions measuring 21mm longer and 12mm increased wheelbase. Bentley has been going gaga about its first ever SUV, the supremely premium 4x4 SUV dubbed ‘Bentayga’ is already grabbing eyeballs and will be on the anvil for all good reasons. Likely to be driven by a petrol-electric powerplant, the SUV will draw power from the 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 engine and the usual 6.0 litre W12 motor good for pulling off 608 PS along with 900Nm. Company claims that the mighty SUV can lumbar past 100 kmph in lightning fast speed of 4.1 seconds.
Top speed achieved by the SUV is around 301 kmph. Besides the petrol motor, Bentley could also introduce diesel and hybrid variants of the SUV in future. Featuring 12 cylinders, the W12 gasoline motor is said to have been made more efficient. The SUV is available in four as well as five seat configuration. As for equipment, an eight- inch touchscreen infotainment system is incorporated inside and it will be linked to a 60GBhard drive. For rear passengers Bentley Entertainment Tablet which is essentially a 10.2-inch Android device with 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities has been employed.
Having being revealed already much ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show, Ferrari 488 Spider is claimed to be the most powerful mid-rear-engined V8 make ever from the Italian supercar maker. Along with this, it is also the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari Spider made ever. The spaceframe chassis used under the supercar is made of eleven different aluminium alloys that have been combined with metals like magnesium. Jaguar’s F-Pace or the production version of C-X17 concept appears largely similar to the concept form. The crossover comes with five-seat configuration, there is enough space inside the cabin to seat passengers comfortably on the middle row. Rivalling the likes of Porsche Cayenne, the F-Pace will be available for from early next year.
Power will come from the company’s efficient range of Ingenium petrol and diesel engines. Other than these, the vehicle could also come with a 3.0 litre, V6 ‘S’ version, the potent SRV 5.0 litre, V8 engine could also be spun off later. An all electric version of the crossover could also be contemplated in coming years, but as of now nothing concrete on that.
Touted to be the largest model in the Mini portfolio, Mini Clubman measures 4253 mm long and 1800 mm wide which is around 158 mm longer and 10mm wider. The increase in dimensions has led to an overall rise in weight by 155 kg which not just makes the vehicle bulkier but also affects the fuel efficiency. Exteriors also seen change with a single unit radiator grille in front flanked by large round shaped head lamps. Rear gets horizontally placed tail lights unlike the vertical tail lights equipped on the predecessor.
The vehicle now features six-doors with two on the back. Change in dimensions has increased the space within the cabin. Centre console is quite similar to the other MINIs. Among various equipments an infotainment system with BMW’s signature dials has been placed on the centre console. Under the engine hood is a 1.5 litre, three cylinder, petrol mill good for 135PS along with 200Nm. There could also be an option for a 2.0 litre gasoline poewrtrain.
Porsche is among the prominent auto giants that will be seen at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the car maker will not only bring new cars to the podium but also new engines and technology that is intends to use in its cars in future. This time Porsche will get along 911 Carrera hard top and drop top variants to be shown at the show.
Changes made to the new version of the supercar remains to be mechanical largely while subtle cosmetic tweaks are evident on the outside like LED DRLs, reworked air inlets, modified tail lamps and restyled engine cover. Cabin on the other hand could feature upgraded Porsche Communication Management touchscreen infotainment system with WiFI and Apple Carplay. Buggati has a new concept up its sleeve, named Vision Gran Turismo, the new concept is said to have taken cues from the Veyron successor ‘Chiron’.
German giant Volkswagen is readying to unveil the concept version of all new Tiguan SUV. Along with this, the company may also bring along the facelifted version of Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet featuring a number of tweaks.
SsangYong will come up with two fresh SUV concepts, one is the XLV-Air and the second is the XAV-Adventure. The former is the stretched avatar of Tivoli while the second is the jagged compact SUV which could possibly replace the Korando in UK.
Ford will bring along two models, Ford Edge SUV and Ford Ranger pick-up, out of two the former will be introduced in 2016 while latter will be brought to light in the coming months.
Unlike other car makers, Hyundai will induct its sub-division ‘N’ which is aimed at offering cut-price cars that will be built on the lines of performance oriented sub-brands of German auto makers, BMW M and Mercedes AMG. Other than this, there will be two concept cars too.
Lamborghini is mulling to get convertible version of Huracan, the company says that ‘Spider’ missing in the Gallardo for now will be brought back.
Maserati on the other hand will feature Levante super SUV, the SUV has been afflated by Quattroporte and Ghibli saloons. In its segment it will go up against Porsche Cayenne.
Japanese auto giant Nissan has three models up its sleeve for the upcoming auto show, it plans on getting along Nissan Sporty crossover, Nissan NP300 Navara and Nissan Leaf.
One of the most talked about unveilings at the show is the Megane sedan from French manufacturer Renault. Gearing to rival Ford Focus, Megane gets a captivating design. Along with this, the auto maker will also showcase Escape MPV and Talisman Estate.
