Snapshot: These hatchbacks are highly anticipated and hold importance for the manufacturers as well as the customers who are looking forward to buy any of these vehicles.

Indian automotive industry is one of the biggest in the world. History is a proof for it - in the initial years, cars were meant for a selected rich few people. Then came companies like Maruti and Tata that forced big global names to locally manufacture a few of their vehicles. But the time has come that manufacturers are now manufacturing cars considering India as an export hub with a focus on increasing localization, as high as 98%.

But one segment that attracts such attention from the manufacturers is the hatchback segment and numbers reveal why this segment attracts such attention from the manufacturers. 2.5 million cars are sold annually in India and almost 60-70% of the comprise the hatchbacks. The main reason among many includes budget, low maintenance and parking issues. This trend of selling those cars globally, which are manufactured in India has grown in recent years.

And hence we decided to bring a list of top hatchbacks that are about to come in India. These hatchbacks are highly anticipated and hold importance for the manufacturers as well as the customers who are looking forward to buy any of these vehicles. Also, the Renault Kwid hatchback, that was launched a couple of weeks ago in India drove us towards compiling this list.

Here's a list of top 5 highly anticipated hatchbacks in India!

1. Maruti Suzuki Ignis

First showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show, Ignis is one of the most awited car from Maruti. The launch has been confirmed in early 2017 by Maruti. The car is already on sale in Japan, however in Europe the car is yet to be launched. Under the bonnet, Ignis is likely to carry a 1.3 litre DDiS diesel engine and a 1.2 litre K-Series petrol. An AMT version is likely to be on offer with the petrol right from the start.

High-set car is likely to offer dual-tone dashboard and a layout similar to version of the car we have already seen in Japan. While features are likely to include automatic climate control, a SmartPlay infotainment system etc. Expect great fuel economy and decent levels of safety like two airbags and ABS with EBD on offer. 

2. Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS

With the Baleno, Maruti Suzuki to ended its struggle against the ongoing competetion with the Jazz and Elite i20. The Baleno RS is the performance variant of the Baleno and would compete with cars like Volkswagen Polo GT, Ford Figo and Fiat Abarth Punto. Baleno RS would come equipped with a turbo petrol motor that develops around 100bhp of power. The car has been caught testing several times and it's been known that in addition to the more powerful engine it would also offer disc brakes on all four wheels. Other minor changes include modified front and rear bumpers. 

The RS variant is unlikely to offer a CVT transmission. When the car launches next year, you can expect a couple of variants and to be at par with the competition and offer features like Navigation system, ABS, airbags etc. Fuel-efficiency is another area where you can expect that the Baleno RS would not disappoint.

3. Hyundai Grand i10

Grand i10 has been one of the most successful car from the house of Hyundai. Despite being years of presence in the market, the car still looks frest. However still, the company has confirmed that a new avatar would be launched in January 2017. The car is likely to carry visual changes at the front and back with redesigned bumpers and facia, while the sides and overall silhouette is expected to remain the same. The car has been caught testing a few times and it does not reveal much about the interiors and the expected equipment list.

The car is likely to sport same engine options, 1.2 litre petrol and 1.1 CRDi diesel. Hyundai is known for offering generous equipment level, the Grand i10 is not expected to disappoint. Considering the trend among manufacturers to offer a touchscreen display, we expect the car to offer an integrated navigation system with the top variants of the car. Generous level of safety equipment is also expected to come as standard too.  

4. Tata Tiago AMT

Tiago's success is no fluke, and it is a result of a long-term strategy of Tata. With Tiago already being a popular car among entry-level car buyers, company would be adding the AMT to the feature list to make the car even more attractive. The AMT should offer much needed convenience for city driving and should help pull customers from Maruti which is already much popular among entry-level automatic car buyers. The feature list is not expected to be changed and AMT unit is likely to offer creep functionality despite being a low-cost unit.

Engine options include the 1.2 litre petrol and 1.0 litre diesel. Both come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The AMT unit would only be offered with the petrol engine and would be a 5 gear unit. It's expected that the car would be launched at sometime in the first quarter of 2017.

5. Chevrolet Beat Activ

Chevrolet Beat Activ was showcased at the Auto Expo 2016. The trendy car is based on the Beat but is a funkier avatar of the same. Changes include the sportier looking headlamps, LED DRLs dual tone exterior colour etc. The car would compete along the likes of Grand i10, Swift etc. The efficient 1.0 litre diesel engine on offer has been the strongest among all and would be available in the new car along side the 1.2 litre petrol. The car is expected to be launched during the first quarter of 2017.

Expect generous equipment level including climate control system, adjustable headrests for the front passengers, power windows, accessory power outlet, cup & bottle holder for front and rear passenger etc. The Beat Ativ is unlikely to offer automatic transmission as an option.
