Kawasaki Versys X-300, where does it sits in the Indian market?

Snapshot: Technically, there is no straight competitor to the Kawasaki Versys X-300 in the Indian market at present, but BMW will be launching its new G310 GS by late 2018, which is a highly awaited motorcycle in Indian and will compete against the same.

The Japanese motorcycle giant, Kawasaki introduced the new Versys X-300 in the Indian market a couple of days back and with its launch, it became the most affordable twin-cylinder adventure motorcycle in the Indian market. The company already retails the Versys 1000 and Versys 650 in India which are placed in the segments above. Technically, there is no straight competitor to the Kawasaki Versys X-300 in the Indian market at present, but BMW will be launching its new G310 GS by late 2018, which is a highly awaited motorcycle in Indian and will compete against the same.

The Versys X-300 carries similar design language as seen on the bigger Versys motorcycles. Its long travel suspension, high riding stance, a combination of 19” front and 17” rear spoke wheels, wide and comfortable seat promises to make this bike a great companion for all the adventure touring needs.

How adventurous is it?

The Versys X-300 packs a bunch of exciting stuff that makes it adventure worthy. Unlike other adventure bikes, it really is designed to be a highly functional package which has been engineered to go off the trails and not just on regular roads. Since it carries Versys DNA, it is expected to be a fun off-road machine. At 184kg curb weight, the Versys is not a very lightweight machine, but its rigid backbone, high-tensile steel frame is crafted to provide maximum stability and control. It boasts a ground-clearance of 180mm which is good enough to take it on the roads less traveled, also its 17 liters of fuel tank is a boon when traveling long distances.

The bike also comes with a variety of aftermarket accessories like LED fog lamps, crash guard, and panniers that make it look like adventure ready. In terms of other main features, the bike offers standard ABS and assist slipper clutch.

Why Kawasaki Versys-X300 is this costly?

It doesn’t matter if you are buying a 650cc Kawasaki or a 250cc one, each and every product from the Japanese manufacturer comes as a premium product. The smaller Kawasaki bikes are imported as CKD units while the bigger ones are CBU units straight from Japan, and that is what make these bikes costly. Also, the Versys X-300 is a parallel-twin which will be any way costlier than a single-cylinder engine. The price tag on the Versys X-300 may not be for everyone especially if KTM decides to launch the KTM 390 Duke based adventure bike in India (which will be at least 1.5 lakh cheaper) but it doesn’t make it any less worthy product.

Which motorcycles does it compete against?

The German automaker, BMW is planning to launch the new G310 GS which as a product will be placed closer to the Versys X-300 than anything else in its segment or above. BMW will price the new G310 GS around Rs 3.2 Lakh. While the Kawasaki Versys X-300 is priced at  Rs 4.6 lakh which makes it much higher priced compared to the BMW's tiny adventure bike. The upcoming KTM 390 Duke Adventure might also be counted as its competitor but it will surely be the cheapest option in a sea of small adventure bikes.

What else can I buy at the same price?

There are a couple of good options if you consider spending Rs 4.6 lakh on a motorcycle, but not of the same segment as currently, Versys X-300 stands in a segment of its own. You can go for the new Z650 which is almost 50 grand more costly than the Versys but is also much more powerful but is a street-naked bike. On the other hand, there are a couple of more options available in the form of Harley-Davidson Street 750 and Hyosung GT650R.
