Maintenance Guide - Say no to mist formation

Snapshot: We tell you how to tackle misting problems in your car during winters

The cold winter breeze is here and it has brought with it the age-old problem of mist formation, especially on the front and rear windshields. Mist forms on the windscreen when moisture in the air condenses on the glass if it is colder than the air around it. The result is poor visibility, which can lead to accidents. Obviously, it’s extremely important that the glass around the cabin is kept mist free at all times. We suggest you 10 ways to tackle the misting problem during these cold months.

Use anti-mist spray
Spray the inside of the windscreen with an anti-mist solution and wipe it clean. Different anti-mist spray brands are available in the market. Also, clean the outer surface with a mild detergent. Remember to use a clean cloth so that you don’t leave wipe marks. Newspapers are also good for cleaning windscreens.

Clean ventilation ducts
Moisture and dirt in ventilation ducts result in humidity and lead to misting. Clean all ventilation ports occasionally.

Check the bonnet seal
Water can seep into the radiator and collect if the bonnet seal is loose or worn out.

Change defective door seals
Damaged door seals also let in moisture. Replace if needed.

Seal all cable apertures
Seals around cable apertures should fit tightly.

Dry out the car's seats
Open windows or sunroof can lead to moisture absorption causing acute misting. Make sure all seats are dry. If you detect moisture on the upholstery then use a hair dryer to dry them. This will ensure that the seats don’t retain any moisture.

Soak up any spillages
Any moisture in the cabin will lead to misting. So, if there is any spillage soak it up as soon as you can.

Turn on the air con
Put on the air-conditioner in defog and fresh air mode and set a temperature that's not too high. This takes care of any condensation on the front windshield.

Clean the door openings
If door openings get clogged then it will collect water leading to rusting that will allow moisture seepage.

Use the rear defogger
If the rear windscreen mists, use the rear defogger if your car has one. It is the most effective solution of clearing up the fog.
