Isn’t it annoying, when the petrol pump attendant accidently puts wrong fuel in your car. Misfuelling any car can have catastrophic effects on the engine and can sometimes turn out to be expensive apart from being time consuming. Don’t be fuelish! WE answers few questions related to misfuelling.
What is the damage?
Misfuelling can be a real tough problem. The increasingly stringent exhaust emission regulations make the situation worse. The fuels and catalyst systems on cars, both petrol and diesel, are damaged by even small amounts of the incorrect fuel. Even with little amount of petrol instead of diesel, the lubrication ?lm in the injection pump can break. Petrol in modern diesel car can cause major engine damage. The only solution: pump out wrong fuel and clean the fuel system. Old diesel cars can tolerate up to 30 per cent of petrol. If a petrol car is fed diesel, the resulting unburned fuel passing through to the exhaust can cause the catalyst to overheat.
What should I do with a misfuelled car?
If you get to know that the petrol pump guy has put the wrong fuel in your car, don’t start the engine. If it has been run, stop as soon as reasonably possible. The contaminated fuel will have to be drained with the correct equipment, and the fuel properly disposed of. If the car is still under warranty, check with a franchised dealer for the correct remedial procedure. Some cars might have seals and ?lters replaced even if the engine has not been run. Drain out the wrong fuel from the fuel tank. Fuel tanks have two fuel lines - one to suck up the fuel from the bottom of the tank, and the other to return the unused fuel from the engine. All modern engines have fuel pumps to suck fuel up to the engine. You need to determine the steering wheel and look at the sticker and see any reference to a fuse for the fuel pump then you have an electric fuel pump. The entire cleaning of the fuel line would cost around Rs.1000 for most cars. Ensure that is done at an authorised service station only.
Petrol is highly explosive. Therefore, smoking is prohibited at fuel pumps. Also mobile phones can be dangerous: these might fall down, and there could be sparks from the battery on impact which can ignite the fuel vapours. In the worst case, this might blow up the fuel pump.
