Maruti Suzuki WagonR has always been a promising add-on to the company’s sales figure. The home-grown car manufacturer recently launched the popular tall-boy hatchback in a new avatar at Rs. 4.19 lakh. The 2019 Maruti Suzuki WagonR Facelift is bigger than its predecessor and now offers more cabin space. The car will directly take on the recently launched Hyundai Santro 2018, but for a change, let’s find out how it goes with the Hyundai Grand i10, on paper. The Grand i10 is a segment higher than the WagonR but both are powered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, just to make it interesting. We thought of going through an on-paper comparison among them.
Dimensions
The Maruti Suzuki WagonR new model is built on the company’s Heartect platform that makes it bigger and also lighter, as compared to the outgoing model. The new model is longer by 19 mm and wider by 125 mm, and also sits on a wheelbase longer by 35 mm, so the new version speaks of more interior space. The new Maruti Suzuki WagonR is longer than the recently launched Hyundai Santro by 45 mm but falls short when standing right next to Grand i10, by just 10 mm, while if we talk about the wideness of the vehicle, the new WagonR is narrower than its counterparts, and it is 25 mm and 40 mm narrower than the Santro and Grand i10, respectively. Being popular for its tall-boy design, the 2019 WagonR stands tall when compared to both the rivals, at 1675 mm and also has a longer wheelbase than the other two. The interesting bit here is that the Hyundai Grand i10 is longer by 10 mm compared to the WagonR, but the wheelbase is shorter by 10 mm than the WagonR’s.

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR specifications are offered with a 1.0-litre three-pot petrol engine that makes 68 bhp of power with 90 Nm of torque and there is a more powerful 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine (also serves the Swift and Ignis) offering as well that makes 82 bhp of power with 112 Nm of top torque. In terms of power, the Hyundai Santro new model makes 68 bhp, which is at par with that of WagonR’s output; however, the Hyundai Santro Facelift has more torque than the WagonR. The Hyundai Santro specifications include a 1.0-litre engine along with a CNG variant; in coming times, we can expect the WagonR to get a CNG variant. The Grand i10 power and torque figures are at par with the 2019 WagonR, where the former produces 81 bhp with 114 Nm. Hyundai Grand i10 is also offered with a diesel variant which is low with power figure but high on torque at 190 Nm. Speaking of the transmission system, WagonR is offered with a 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT on both engine variants and so does the Santro. Hyundai Grand i10 specifications in terms of transmission include the options of 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic on the petrol version and the diesel version is offered with a 5-speed manual only.

Cabin and Features
Going with the ongoing trends, now the new Maruti Suzuki WagonR features a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Mirror Link, and so does its counterparts. For the safety, it’s the 2018 Hyundai Santro features a driver side airbag and the dual airbags is available on the top variant, whereas the other two come with dual airbags as standard fitments. Both the Hyundai’s are offered with 4 speakers whereas the WagonR is offered with 2 speakers only. What’s more interesting is that the WagonR and Santro are offered with Voice command, which is missing on the Grand i10. The Santro misses out on the rear parking sensor, which is available in the other two, but Hyundai Grand i10 features a reverse parking camera as well. ABS, EBD and a seat-belt reminder are standard across all variants in all the models.
Value for Money
Coming to the pricing, the new Maruti Suzuki WagonR price in India starts from Rs. 4.19 lakh and goes up to a range of Rs. 5.69 lakh, whereas the new Hyundai Santro price in India starts from Rs. 3.89 lakh and goes as high as Rs. 5.64 lakh. Now, Santro’s pricing is low, but that said, there are some features that the base variant loses out on. The Santro top-end variant is offered with a 1.0-litre engine only whereas the WagonR top-end version comes packed with a 1.2-litre engine and some add on features, such as dual airbags and rear parking sensors. On the other hand, the Hyundai Grand i10 price in India is a step ahead, starting at Rs. 4.91 lakh going up to Rs 7.56 lakh, which is way out of the budget for someone looking for an entry-level hatchback.
