After the success of its mid-size SUV Hector in the Indian market, MG Motor revealed its second product for the country called the ZS EV, which also happens to be its first fully-electric vehicle here. The electric crossover SUV was launched internationally earlier this year and is set to go on sale in India in January 2020.

Even though MG is yet to reveal the price of the ZS EV, its powertrain, range, and size confirm that it will directly rival the Hyundai Kona Electric in India. So far, the Kona Electric has performed better than what the Korean carmaker had expected, but should it lose sleep over the upcoming MG ZS EV? We pit the two against each other to find out.

MG ZS EV Vs. Hyundai Kona Electric Dimensions

Even though both the SUVs can seat max five occupants, the MG ZS EV is slightly bigger than the Hyundai Kona Electric. The former is 134 mm longer, 9 mm wider, 50 mm taller and also 32 kg lighter than the latter. However, the Kona Electric has a 21 mm longer wheelbase, as compared to the ZS EV.

MG ZS EV Vs. Hyundai Kona Electric Battery Specifications

MG is offering the ZS EV in India with a 44.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, which can be charged up to 80% via a 50 kW DC charger in under 50 minutes. A regular 7.4 kWh AC wall-box charger will fully charge the ZS EV is up to 7 hours. The car has an ARAI certified range of 340 km.

On the other hand, the Kona Electric gets a 39.2 kWh battery that delivers an ARAI certified fully-electric driving range of 452 km. The Hyundai car takes 57 minutes to be charged up to 80% with the help of a DC fast-charger, while a 7.2 kW AC charger will charge the Kona up in 6 hours and 10 minutes.

It should also be noted that Hyundai offers a 2.8 kW portable AC charger with the Kona Electric, which can be plugged into any 15A wall socket to fully charge its battery in 19 hours, while a 3-hour charge will get you a range of 50 km.

MG ZS EV Vs. Hyundai Kona Electric Powertrains

Both the EVs come equipped with a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) and are offered with a front-wheel-drive configuration along with a single-speed automatic transmission. The upcoming ZS EV has a higher power output (143 hp) than the Kona Electric (135 hp), while the latter churns out more torque (395 Nm) as compared to the former (353 Nm).

Hyundai claims that the Kona Electric can sprint from 0 to 100kmph in 9.7 seconds, while MG Motor says that its ZS EV can easily outdo it, with a claimed 0-100 kmph time of just 8.5 seconds.

MG ZS EV Vs Hyundai Kona Electric Features

Sadly, like its IC engine sibling Hector, the ZS EV will not be getting a large vertical touchscreen infotainment system. However, the car gets an 8-inch unit featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity instead. The car also additionally gets MG’s iSMART 2 connected tech which is powered by an eSIM and can receive OTA updates as well.

Apart from that, the ZS EV gets a multi-functional flat-bottom steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, a panoramic sunroof along a 6-way electrically adjustable driver seat.

The Kona Electric gets smaller 7-inch touchscreen infotainment, but also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The car gets a 10-way power adjustable driver seat but gets a smaller electric sunroof as compared to the ZS EV.

Other features on the Kona include a wireless phone charger, ventilating and heating function for front seats. The Korean car also boasts a 7-inch multi-info display, while the ZS EV only makes do with a 3.5-inch unit.

In terms of safety, the MG ZS EV gets six airbags, front and rear seat-belt reminder, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, an electric parking brake, a reverse camera with dynamic lines, Electronic Stability Control, Hill-start Assist Control, Hill Descent Control along with a tyre-pressure monitoring system.

Hyundai’s Kona performs pretty well on the safety front too. It gets six airbags, ABS and EBD, Vehicle Stability Management, Hill-start Assist Control, Electronic Stability Control, disc brakes on all four wheels and a Virtual Engine Sound System that generates a faux engine sound to ensure pedestrian safety.

Since the shift towards greener vehicles is still in its early stages in our country, EVs carry a premium price tag. Hyundai offers the Kona Electric in India in two variants, which cost Rs 23.71 lakh and Rs 23.90 lakh (ex-showroom).

MG Motor India is yet to reveal the price of the ZS EV, but we expect the car to be priced between Rs 20-22 lakh (ex-showroom) when it goes on sale in January next year.
