MotoGP Basics - Point Allocation in terms of Final Race positions

Snapshot: We take our MotoGP basics series further to explain Point Allocation!!

Hello Riders!! as you all know, we have started a series of articles with which we are going to try and touch the basics of MotoGP. It is an endeavour we have taken to promote and educate people about MotoGP as a sport. With an ever growing fan base of MotoGP in India, we believe it is our duty to start from the dire basics and explain the sport we so dearly love and admire. As It has always been our motto at Bikeportal to "Spread the love for Motorcycles and Motorcycling - Like Riders do and like they always will".

If you have been following our MotoGP updates in recent times, then you would know, we have discussed the history of this sport as well as we have been bringing Race Circuit details in a infograph showing the brief history and text about the previous year's records on the track. We do this for every track the MotoGP is going to this year, one by one.

Today we take this further to talk about the 'Point Allocation System' that works throughout all the classes in MotoGP, namely Moto3, Moto2 and the MotoGP, where Riders and Constructors (manufacturers) compete for respective World Championship titles in their categories. The participating Teams, meanwhile, compete for a MotoGP Team Championship, which is different to the Constructors Championship as there are different teams competing on machinery from the same manufacturer, such as Yamaha Factory Racing and Tech3 Yamaha.

The Rider Championship is decided upon the final total of all the points gained throughout the season, the points that Riders gain in each race. For Constructors, only the highest placed motorcycle of a Constructor will gain points, according to the position in the race. Teams in the MotoGP class are in principle comprised of two riders. All points scored by both riders in the Team, including substitutes or replacements, will count towards the Team Championship. In the case of a one rider Team, only the points scored by that rider will count towards the Team Championship. Wild card riders will not score points for the Team Championship.

For each race, Championship points will be awarded on the following scale:

•    1st Position - 25 points.
•    2nd Position - 20 points.
•    3rd Position - 16 points.
•    4th Position - 13 points.
•    5th Position - 11 points.
•    6th Position - 10 points.
•    7th Position - 9 points.
•    8th Position - 8 points.
•    9th Position - 7 points.
•    10th Position - 6 points.
•    11th Position - 5 points.
•    12th Position - 4 points.
•    13th Position - 3 points.
•    14th Position - 2 points.
•    15th Position - 1 point.

In the event of a tie in the number of points, the final positions will be decided on the basis of the number of best results (number of first places, number of second places etc.). In the event that there is still a tie then, the date in the Championship at which the highest place was achieved will be taken into account with precedence going to the latest result.
