Mumbai Police punishes speeding bikers with haircuts

Snapshot: This new way of punishing over-speeding bikers is not just humiliating but can be considered against the law on a personal level.

According to a report published on The Hindustan Times, Kherwadi Police in Mumbai arrested 13 motorcycle riders over-speeding on the WEH (Western Express Highway). The law breakers were arrested under sections 279 (rash driving) and 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code. The arrested bikers were heading on their way towards South-Mumbai. Police targeted the ones over-speeding without the helmets and having outrageous hairdos. They were then taken to the Kherwadi police station and a barber was called in to forcibly give them haircuts. This new way of punishing over-speeding bikers is not just humiliating but can be considered against the law on a personal level.

Danish Shaikh, 20, a hotel management student from Kurla spoke to the media that he spent Rs 3,500 on his haircut few weeks back and Police could have followed the law fined them instead of giving them such haircuts. According to the Police officials, motorcycle gangs are sprouting within the city limits and hence road rash and night racing clubs are on the rise. Most of the races takes place on Carter Road, Bandra Reclamation, Western Express Highway and Kherwadi Flyover. These gangs are a threat to everyone on roads as they do not follow traffic rules and hence are considered a risk.
