Renault-Nissan alliance is one of the few alliances that boast of such variety of cars and technological developments they have made in the automotive industry. Led by Carlos Ghosn currently, the Japanese automajor entered India 10 years ago, and to celebrate the milestone, Nissan is holding a 4 day mega Nissan CARnival which started on Friday and the day 1 was meant for media personnel only.
Held on the Budh International Circuit, located at the outskirts of Delhi, the capital of India, the event witnessed some of the best products from Nissan globally flown to India specially for the carnival, like the Nissan Leaf electric car and the mighty Patrol SUV. Apart from showcasing both these products, Nissan also demonstrated the capability of current Nissan products in India.
Announcing the Nissan Carnival, Guillaume Sicard, President, Nissan India Operations said, “Nissan stands for innovation and excitement - this isn't just a slogan but our promise to all our customers everywhere. At the Carnival we want everyone to experience this first-hand through revolutionary products like LEAF and the technological innovation that we are known for around the world."
“The event also marks and celebrates our arrival in India a decade ago. Within this relatively short period Nissan has become one of the fastest growing automobile manufacturers in the country with a strong portfolio of seven locally manufactured products across seven different market segments. The Nissan Carnival highlights our growing presence within the market and underlines our long-term commitment to India", he added.
The Carnival was divided into four zones-
1. To check the Pure Drive as performed in the Micra
2. To check the Xtronic Transmission Technology as performed in Sunny
3. LEAF zone to check the maneuverability of the electric car
4. Off-road to zone to check Patrol and Terrano as capable off-roaders.
While everything was good in itself, what fascinated us most was the drive on the Patrol SUV and Nissan Leaf EV. Both the products are highly capable in their respective genre and highlights the future of the company. While we were hoping that Nissan should launch them here, slight hint from the manufacturer like an opinion poll has revealed that they might launch both the products in future.
Nissan Patrol SUV
Nissan Patrol is a highly capable off-roader who has tasted much success in the middle-east, where SUVs are used for off-roading purposes. The monster of a vehicle is in its sixth-generation now and comes equipped with a 5.8 litre V8 engine capable of producing 400 bhp of power and 560 Nm of maximum torque.
As much as the Patrol is luxurious from inside, so is she rugged from outside. The SUV comes with various modes including a gravel select mode, which can help you choose between snow, mud, sand, etc. and a hill descent control button paired with safety elements like Traction Control system. All these features make the Patrol a highly capable SUV.
To test the abilities of Patrol, two tracks were selected, one a natural off-roading one with all ditches and inclines and steep descents and a man-made course with obstacles like potholes, inclines, elevations etc. And the Nissan Patrol came out with flying colors from every possible challenge thrown at her.
Nissan Leaf EV
While the Nissan Patrol is indeed a capable vehicle, it is still a lifestyle vehicle. On the other hand, the Leaf electric vehicle is the need of the time. Nissan Leaf is the best selling electric vehicle till date and has sold over 160,000 units globally. And to help in our endeavour to get the best of the EV, Arman Ibrahim, a well known motorsports personality of India was with us.
Famous as the zero emission vehicle, the Leaf is powered by a 80 kW electric motor that produces 254 Nm of torque making it a very quick car. The urban electric hatchback has a futuristic interior and comfortable ride quality. It also comes with features like ABS, EBD, six airbags, Vehicle Dynamic Control and Traction Control System.
Apart from Leaf and Patrol, which do not sell in India and were imported from Dubai in the left-hand drive configuration, Nissan showcased all the products available in India at the event including the Micra, Sunny, Evalia and Terrano.
