Though the Swift is shortest, it is also the most widest and tallest in comparison, measuring 1,695mm in width. Next comes Punto Evo, Volkswagen Polo and the Elite i20. In terms of wheelbase, the Hyundai Elite i20 rakes the top spot, followed by Punto Evo, Volkswagen Polo and the Maruti Suzuki Swift. The Maruti Suzuki Swift features the smallest boot space of 210 litres.

Engine & Performance (Petrol)
The newly launched Fiat Punto Evo and the Hyundai i20 are both being powered by a 1.2-litre and a 1.4-litre petrol engine. The Volkswagen Polo too, gets two petrol engine options: a 1.2-litre and a 1.2-litre GT TSI unit. The Maruti Suzuki Swift on the other hand, is available with only one engine option, i.e. a 1.2-litre unit. All the four hatchbacks comes with a standard 5-Speed manual transmission, except for the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI, which gets a 7-Speed DSG automatic and the i20 1.4-litre variant, which is equipped with a 4-Speed automatic tranny.

Among the lot, is the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI that puts out the most power at 105PS, while the Punto Evo 1.2-litre produces the lowest power output of 68PS. In terms of torque, it is again the Polo GT TSI that is rated at the top with 175Nm at tap, while the Punto Evo’s engine produces the least amount of torque at 96Nm.

In terms of fuel efficiency, it is tough for any automaker to beat the mileage derived out of Maruti Suzuki cars. The ARAI claimed figure for the Swift hatchback stands at a class leading 18.6 kmpl, while the Punto Evo is able to return a mileage of 14.4 kmpl, making it least efficient in the lot.

Engine & Performance (Diesel)
The diesel variants of the Punto Evo and the Swift both employs the same 1.3-litre Multijet powerplant. However, Fiat has tuned the said engine in two states: one producing 78PS of max power and 197Nm of peak torque and the other, producing 90PS of max power and 209Nm of peak torque. The Volkswagen Polo too, uses the new 1.5-litre unit that is offered in two states of tune. Lastly, the i20 makes use of a 1.4-litre powerplant.

Among the lot, it is the brand new 1.5-litre unit equipped in the Volkswagen Polo that produces the highest power output at 105PS, while the Swift produces the least power at 73PS. In terms of torque, the Polo GT TDI once again, tops the chart at 205Nm, while the Swift hatchback comes in at the last position.

All the aforementioned engine have been coupled to a 5-Speed manual gearbox, except for the i20, which comes mated to a 6-Speed manual tranny.
