Renault Duster Vs Mahindra Thar (Design and Exteriors)

Both Duster and Thar are SUVs but they look quite different on the exterior. While the Duster might not look like an extreme sports machine but it surely attracts the onlookers with its bold and muscular looks. The car features trendy rooflines, big bulges and nicely carved out wheel arches with stylish steel or alloy wheels, while the RXL and RXZ all – wheel drive variants gets stunning gun metal grey alloy wheels.

It has a very muscular stance due to its big size and the side creases. The front is nicely designed with the chrome front grille and angular headlights. The rear with curvy fifth door and rectangular tail lamps further showcase intelligent crafting.

Mahindra Thar on the other hand has rugged and masculine looks. The bonnet, doors, wheel arches, and roof all appear as separate individual elements. A rigid front grille is placed on the front fascia along with the typical round headlights.

Another signature exterior aspect is the windscreen which is quite wide. The CDRe version gets bumper and wheel arches, clear lens headlamps, redesigned canopy, side footsteps as well as removal canopy which is a feature also made available in the DI variant.

Renault Duster Vs Mahindra Thar (Interiors and Features)

While Duster is loaded with convenience and comfort features, Thar is basic and minimal in what it offers. Duster offers a lot of room inside the cabin. It features a dual color interior with good quality upholstery,3-Dial techno sporty instrument cluster and an enhanced central console, cruise control and much more.

The cruise control is present only in the higher end models currently. Duster also power steering, keyless entry, AC with climate control, rear AC vents, electrically adjustable ORVMs, CD/MP3 player with FM/AM & USB + AUX-IN, bluetooth, navigation which is not available in the base variant, tilt steering wheel etc.

On the other hand driving the Thar is simple, all thanks to the integral power assisted steering that can support a turning radius of just 5.25 meters. However, this feature comes as standard for the mid-range and top end variants.

Some highlights of the cockpit are a redesigned instrument cluster with three round shaped analogue meters like speedometer, rpm meter, fuel gauge and few other notifications lamps. Both the cars are set to target different audience as they are built to satisfy different needs.

Renault Duster Vs Mahindra Thar (Engine and Transmission)

Renault Duster is available in 1.6L petrol and 1.5L diesel engine options. The 1.6L 4-cylinder K4M 4 DOHC cylinder petrol engine of this crossover produces peak power of 104PS at 5750rpm and top torque of 148Nm at 3750RPM. This engine is paired with a 5 speed manual transmission. The diesel comes in two sets of tune – 85PS and 110PS and is powered by a 1.5 liter dCi engine of 1461 cc displacement that can deliver 85PS of power at 3750 rpm and a peak torque of 200 Nm at 1750 rpm. This engine is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox, while the 110 PS versions produces a peak torque of 245Nm at 1750 rpm and come with a 6 speed manual transmission. The all – wheel drive variant is available in diesel 110PS power option.

Thar might not be urban as Renault Duster but what it can perform off the road is incomparable. Its base variant and the mid-range trims are equipped with a 2.5-litre MDI 320TC L diesel engine that has a displacement capacity of 2523cc. This four cylinder mill churns out 63.87PS with a torque of 182.5Nm between just 1500 to 1800rpm. It has a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox. The mid-range variant gets a manual shift transfer case with 2-speed gear levels that distribute torque onto all its four wheels. The top variant engine is a 2.5-litre CRDe motor with four cylinders and 16-valves. This 2.5 litre CRDe mill generates a power of 106.45PS at 3800rpm and torque of 247Nm between 1800 to 2000rpm.

Renault Duster Vs Mahindra Thar (Safety features and Mileage)

Duster’s 1.6litre petrol engine delivers mileage of 13.24kmpl, while its 1.5L diesel mill delivers fuel efficiency of 20.64kmpl. What can truly be applauded is the high powering 110PS 1.5L diesel Nav engine variant that delivers 19.01kmpl mileage, as per ARAI test results. Mahindra Thar top variant CRDe engine can give a peak mileage of 11.5kmpl in the city and can go up to 15.5kmpl on highways. While the base and mid variant MDI 3200TC L engine can give away a maximum mileage of 10 – 12kmpl for the 4x2 version and 4x4 versions.

In terms of safety, Duster provides a wide range of features. ABS is featured in all the variants. Front airbags and rear parking sensors are available in only the top variant and the mid-level variants. Other standard features include central locking, engine immobilizer, door open warning lamp, engine protection under guard, rear defogger and driver seat belt reminder. Thar on the other hand is again moderate as it comes only with basic safety features like dual hydraulic circuit braking system and 3 point seat belts. What’s great is that the car gets powerful disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear.

Verdict

Renault Duster is the obvious choice when it comes to features, comfort, convenience, safety and practicality as it has incorporated it all under one roof. But Duster falls short of Mahindra Thar in terms sturdiness and ruggedness. Thar remains as one of the best options available for those who love off-roading. However, it lacks certain safety and convenience features and luxury is not an element of this car. Both the cars are great and in general, they both just serve different purposes.
