Renault Kwid 1.0: What’s new!

Snapshot: Renault has just introduced a 1.0litre engine for its hot selling Kwid. The already great product just gets a power boost and makes it even more desirable. Here's a look at whats new.

Renault Kwid is already a hot selling small car with more than half of its customers as first time car owners. And why not, it looks great, has attractive colour options, decent ground clearance and comes with a lot of features. The 800cc engine it came with was another plus as it is fuel efficient and docile to drive, but a bit underpowered when you consider all other options in this particular price bracket. Renault India has kindly addressed the issue by topping it up with a 1.0 litre engine which makes more power and utilises the 5-speed gearbox much better.

Bigger and more powerful engine

The new engine displaces 1.0litre in 3-cylinders making 67bhp at 5,500rpm and 91Nm of peak torque at 4.250rpm. The added 200cc capacity on the previous engine gives it a power hike by 14bhp and torque increase by 19Nm, both at lesser engine speeds. Because of decreased rpm, engine is less strained thus increasing reliability. Transmission is the same 5-speed manual as before, although Renault has announced the launch of the AMT variant with the new 1.0litre engine soon. This new engine will be able to return an ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure of 23.01kmpl.

Quieter inside

Besides working on the engine Renault engineers have also worked on the NVH levels of this new variant. Renault states they have worked on dampening noises from under engine mounts and altered the timing belt to quieten under the bonnet. Also slower engine running speeds mean lesser noise.

Looks cooler

Although the changes are barely perceptible, 1.0 Kwid gets new silver finish on OVRMs, few 1.0 badges and chequered decals on the doors. Yes, these are tiny changes but they make the 1.0 Kwid look chic and peppier. Rest the entire SUVish body remains the same with its class-leading 180mm ground clearance to match the appeal.

Also the announcement of the soon-to-be-launched AMT automatic version will make it one of the easiest cars to drive around the city. Renault India will setting up 270 touch points by the end of this year. The company also has plans to establish a ‘workshop on wheels’ service for its customers.
