India has a very challenging and dynamic automobile market and the automakers always have to be on their toes to survive. The Indian automobile market also has a number of unique and 'India Only' segments as well which includes sub-4-meter Sedan and sub-4-meter SUV. No other market in the world has such exclusive segments and for the update, the aforementioned segments are doing quite well in terms of sales, better than the conventional vehicle segments. Automakers are also relying on these unique sub-4-meter segments to drive sales charts. But, these segments come with their own challenges as the brands have to fit every element including styling, technology, space and an engine in that 4 meters of length.
Now, with the unveiling of Renault Triber, the French automaker is claiming to have invented a new segment in India which is a sub-4-meter MPV or the micro MPV. The Renault Triber is a people mover, which claims to be rich in space, features and power. All of this in less than 4 meters of length. We expect that this particular micro MPV segment can be a threat to the full-fledged MPVs because if you are in search of a conventional MPV but don't want to shell out, you can surely opt for a more affordable yet practical micro MPV. Having said that, we have done a comparison between the recently unveiled Renault Triber and 2018 Maruti Suzuki Ertiga as we expect that the top trim of Triber might lock horns with the Ertiga's base variant - Ertiga LXi. Read it right here and decide for yourself - a micro MPV or a full-fledged MPV.
The Renault Triber is based on an all-new architecture which is derived from Renault Kwid's CMF-A platform. The Renault Triber exterior sports chrome grille which gives the micro MPV a premium appeal. The projector headlamp units flank the grille with a big Renault logo sitting in between. The LED DRLs sit below the headlamps on either side. The short hood has character lines which make the front end of Triber more sporty. The Renault Triber has also got some SUV styling bits on the outside including - scuff plates, roof rails, runners on the lower part of gates and claddings around wheel arches. The rear-end comprises of wraparound tail lamps, a small spoiler and Triber branding at the centre of the tailgate.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
The seven-seater from the homegrown automaker is based on the all-new Heartect platform which is lighter and stronger. The 2018 Maruti Suzuki Ertiga received a number of cosmetic updates which made it look more desirable and exclusive. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga exterior includes chrome studs on the grille which looks quite premium and the larger projector headlamps consisting the LED DRLs adds freshness to the 2018 edition of the MPV. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga LXi variant misses out on the chrome studs and gets the piano black finish on the grille. The slopping bonnet has character lines and looks more sculpted. The side profile comprises subtle wheel arches, tornado line connecting the two gates and the character line begins from the front quarter and meets the tail lamps at the rear. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga sports L-shaped tail lamps which makes the MPV look broader and the last quarter glass seems to merge with the rear windscreen.
The Renault Triber interior is one of the major highlights of the micro MPV. It consists of dual tone treatment, a metallic finish that runs through the dashboard, digital instrument cluster with 3.5-inch LCD screen, and an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some other interior features are circular control knobs placed on the centre console, beverage cup holders and other storage spaces. The interior has a premium feel and even the hard plastic used in the cockpit is of good quality. The knee room for the second row is good enough when the seats are pushed completely forward and there is ample amount of knee room when the seats are pushed back. The third row is comfortable but there's less headroom as compared to the second room. The rear AC vents are placed in the pillars and it won't be uncomfortable for the passenger seated in the centre of the second row. The Renault Triber also has keyless entry, push-button start and power windows.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga interior has got dual-tone treatment, 60:40 split with slide and recline in the second-row seats, 50:50 split with recline in the third-row seats, adjustable headrests for each row and driver side sun visor with a ticket holder. MID with the coloured TFT instrument cluster, manual AC, air-cooled twin cup holder beneath the centre console and accessory socket in the front row and power & tilt steering are some other added interior features. Safety features in the Ertiga LXi variant include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, engine immobilizer, ISOFIX child seat belts in the second row, speed sensitive auto door lock, high-speed alert system and central locking. However, the LXi variant misses out on the digital infotainment system, however, you can get it as an accessory.
Engine & Transmission
2018 Maruti Suzuki Ertiga price in India (ex-showroom) is Rs 7.25 lakh for the LXi variant while the price range of the Eritga goes till Rs 11.21 lakh for the higher variants. While the information on Renault Triber price is scarce at the moment, we expect it to be around Rs 5.30 lakh to Rs 7.15 lakh. For the update, Datsun Go Plus also ranges between Rs 3.87 lakh to Rs 5.74 lakh (ex-showroom) and becomes a core rival of the Triber.
