Rise of Freestyle Stunt riding in India

Rise of Freestyle Stunt riding in India

Snapshot: India is emerging to be a new hub for people to showcase their riding talents. Be it biking festivals or stunting championships, India has it all.

“India is changing” this is the simplest statement that can be used to explain that this country is going through a lot of good changes now. Be it our economy, standard of living or anything else, everything you are seeing around is evolving. We are no longer bound to one day or test Crickets. IPL and 20-20 have emerged to be a new source of entertainment for India now. And adding to the list there is one more sport that is coming out big and loud in India and in fact it is not referred as a sport as it is listed in extreme sports. Yes! We are talking about Stunt Riding here. I bet most of us have tried popping wheelies after we learnt to ride our first motorcycle and there are people who make their living out of this motor-sport we call Stunt Riding. This is not a game for them this is their lifestyle!

“Riding is a passion for me and professional freestyle biking is something I enjoy. I have tried to give it a status of a sport and I’m glad the world is opening up to it and how” - Chris Pfeiffer(Freestyle Stunt Rider)

If there is something that motivated Indian masses for this sport, then it is none other than MTV’s famous Stuntmania series which showcased stunting as a competitive motorsports at such a big platform. For last few years now India have seen visits of some of the big shots of Stunting Industry such as Chris Pfeiffer, Rafal Pasierbek (Stunter 13), Jorian Ponomareff and Patrick Stephens.

There are some amazingly talented stunting groups here in India such as GhostRiderz, Team Everlast, Throttlerz. These are among the best and talking about Indian talent, “MONTY MTV STUNT MANIAC” is the Facebook profile’s name of countries one of the most famous free style Stunt Rider Mohit Choudhury aka Monty Tigerpride. He has been active since last 12 years now and was a runner up in MTV’s Stunt Riding series “Stunt Mania”. He has also been associated with many motorcycle groups such as “Bikers for Good” and his crew “Team Everlast” is officially sponsored from KTM India for Stunt Shows.

“For men, bikes have always been a symbol of status and power,” he says.

His fleet consists of a Yamaha FZ16, Bajaj Pulsar 200, two Bajaj Pulsar 220s, Honda Stunner and a KTM 200 Duke. In the year 2013 Patrick Stephens organized a stunting workshop in Mumbai for the stunt bugs to sharpen their stunting skills; Monty has been associated with Patrick Stephens for the same project. They have been successfully organizing this event every year since then.

Rewinding the 2013 Delhi incident where Delhi Police fined 1,012 bikers, impounded 153 bikes, registered six cases and arrested 12, amateur road hooligans go out on rampage destroying peace of public roads and killing image of this sport while the ultimate price has to be paid by the beginner stunter who dreams of becoming a professional in this line and who has to establish himself in this industry. In an interview with Bikeportal Monty clearly underlined the difference he states that “professionals don’t stunt on roads, they sharpen their skill at distant lone places far from any public grounds. India has an enormous talent and all that talent needs is a direction, you give them that and then see what our riders are capable of“.

According to statements written on dnaindia.com, Mikhil Mohan of Ghost Ryderz, a well-established team from Thiruvananthapuram, agrees that you don’t need a road for stunts — even a basketball court will do. Randy Grube the founder of XDL sports believes that India has a huge potential for Stunt riding as a competitive sports, and very soon free-style stunt biking is set to take off as a competitive sport here.
