Mahindra and Mahindra, the indigenous and largest utility car manufacturer in India is on a completely different dimension for the past couple of years. Trying to make a strong foothold among the younger audiences, M&M is redefining the way its cars were perceived in India. The new generation UVs not only looks good but carry a more trendy and striking moniker.

From naming the car more conventionally like Bolero and Scorpio, Mahindra has moved towards unconventional and modern names like XUV500, TUV300 and KUV100. And so much is their love for the letter 'O' (every car name finishes with 'O') that they have retained the 'O' in the new names (atleast verbally).

Here's how Mahindra is naming their new cars -

XUV500

X - Generation X

UV - Utility Vehicle

500 - Series (5 double Oh)

XUV500 can easily be credited with being the first M&M vehicle to be different and it definitely proved a success in the Indian market. Taking inspiration from 'Cheetah', XUV500 gave the budget SUV buyers an option which is one of the best package in the market till now. XUV500 was aimed at the young generation and hence the name starts with 'X' which implies Generation X. 500 implies to the bigger set of engine Mahindra is using and from here on, any new vehicle using the same engine will bear the 500 moniker.

TUV300

T - Tough

UV - Utility Vehicle

300 - Series (3 double Oh)

Bolero was a successful SUV in every manner and with a price tag below Rs 10 lac, it definitely faired good on the sales chart. But with the arrival of new generation compact SUVs, Mahindra Bolero lagged the competition and in came the TUV300. The latest compact SUV offering from Mahindra is aimed for buyers looking for SUV under Rs 8 Lac, and what better than TUV300 which means Tough Utility Vehicle. The 300 in the name will be used for the new generation mHawk80 engine, which made its debut with the TUV300. With all the right features and price tag, M&M TUV300 has done really well on the sales front and giving tough competition to established giants like Ford Ecosport and Hyundai Creta.

KUV100

K - Kool

UV - Utility Vehicle

100 - Series (1 double Oh)

The yet to be launched car has already created a lot of buzz in the market and we don't yet know what segment the car will launch in? The initial impressions going by the official images suggests it will be a compact SUV, while the speculated price keeps it in the hatchback segment. The SUVish hatchback will get a new set of 3-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, developed for the first time for the KUV100. The 'K' in the name means Kool (cool), which means M&M is trying to make this car funky. And the 100 will be used for the new set of engines from here on.
