In last few years, the global premium car manufacturers have shown a considerable interest in the Indian automobile Industry. The growing interest has given a strong foothold to the luxury car makers who have been now bringing in their premium models and settling down the business operations in India. However, India is one of those developing markets where majority of buyers prefer a car that have bare comfort features, adequate amount of power, great mileage with a luring price tag. The market is dominated by these priorities, where hatchback cars appear as the most sought after segment that satisfies all the elementary needs. Furthermore, the hatchback segment in India contributes almost 50% share to the total sales of an year! To make the things more interesting, we brought a list of top 10 cars that has contributed maximum to the Indian auto market in last year.

Maruti Suzuki Alto

The home-grown automaker Maruti landed in auto business in 1983 with its 1st car named as 800. The model was been an evolutionary development that outsold every other car in the market that time. The 800 has successfully lived its several generations and company reincarnated the model in Alto 800 last year. The Alto 800 has been the India's largest selling car with an average sale of 22,000 units for a month. Maruti sold over 2.65 lakh Alto in 2013 that granted it the biggest-selling car title for the same year.

Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire

The 2nd largest-selling model in year 2013 being the Maruti Swift Dzire. The company launched the Dzire in 2008 and no doubt it has bolstered the company's presence in the entry-sedan segment in India. In 2013, Maruti got over 1.98 lakhs customers for Dzire in the Indian market.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Yes! Maruti has made a hat trick by holding the 3rd position too with its victorious Swift, the model that brought a new era for the company in India. Maruti Suzuki launched the Swift in 2005 here, the time when market scenario was unwilling to accept a premium hatchback above mid-size sedan. Initially, the Swift hadn't done much good in the market but launch of diesel powered model outsold every other car in India. Maruti sold 1.61 lakh Swift last year and managed to sell a total of 12000 units for a month.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR

Maruti WagonR stood at 4th rank among the top 10 selling cars for the last year. Although, WagonR get a negative feedback for its design since always, but well-grounded understanding of the customer needs within the company's product planners has resulted into continuous upgrading of the model. The tall boy has been vastly revised since its inception in India. The company accumulates total sales of around 12,000 units every month, while in 2013, 1.61 lakh new buyers took WagonR to their home.

Mahindra Bolero

The fifth biggest-selling car in India is the Mahindra Bolero. However, the Bolero doesn't get many customers in the urban cities, but the tough SUV has been the first choice for buyers in the rural areas. The tough utility vehicle comes in different body shapes serves a wide range of buyers in the country. The India based automaker, M&M, delivered nearly 1.10 lakh units of Bolero in 2013.

Hyundai Eon

Hyundai has been the county's second largest car maker with a total of 9 models on offering in the market. The company introduced its most affordable hatchback, Eon, few years back in India positioned the model against the Maruti Alto. Though, the marginal difference between Alto and Eon is huge but model still managed to place itself at 6th position among the top selling cars in India. Hyundai sold almost 90,000 Eon last year.

Hyundai i10

The entry mid-size hatchback Hyundai i10 has been one of the successful cars in India, got 7th position in year 2013. Due to its appealing interior design, inspiring drivability and loads of features, i10 has cemented its base in the market. The Korean automaker captured around 80,000 buyers for i10 in previous year and now the bizzare response that company is getting for Grand i10, makes the possibility of model to rank high this year.

Hyundai i20

The feature loaded i20 managed to present at 8th position among the top selling for last years. The spacious yet premium looking i20 has been the most selling 90 BHP diesel car in India. Hyundai sold nearly 72,000 units of it last year while maintaining an average sale of 3000 units per month.

Toyota Innova

The most sought after MUV in India is the Toyota Innova that managed to got sold equal to around 64,000 units in yesteryear. The company has been selling around 5000 units every month.

Maruti Ertiga

And finally the list is getting ended with a Maruti product again. The introduction of Ertiga has helped the company to garner a lot more sales in the segment which was unexplored before. The Ertiga has become as a consummate alternative for the segment leader Innova. The model has got a strong foothold in individual buyer and the commercial market as well. The company managed to sell nearly 60000 Ertiga last month while maintaining the monthly sales for almost 5000 units.
