Today we are facing an energy crisis due to extensive exploitation of the world’s resources and we need technology to help us get over this crisis. Today on World’s Environment Day we bring to you a list of top 5 electric bikes that changed the way we look at future motorcycling.  Not only the electric vehicles are changing the way we commute on daily basis but also slowly and steadily electric vehicles are becoming the answer to the world’s growing energy need. Many of the world biggest brands are working dedicatedly towards the research and development of electric vehicles. With the resurgence of electric vehicle technology, a special race event called TT zero which is an officially sanctioned Isle of Man TT race is for racing electric motorcycles only. In TT zero races "The technical concept is for motorcycles to be powered without the use of carbon based fuels and have zero toxic/noxious emissions." Now should we start talking about the best electric motorcycles built in the world today.

1)      Mission R- The world’s most advance electric motorcycle

 Mission R is a futuristic beautifully engineered motorcycle that is packed with 120 kW (160 hp) electric motor. This electric motor is integrated with a proprietary Mission Motorcycles InfiniteDrive™. The race-proven InfiniteDrive™ powertrain from Mission RS is used to power the Mission R. This InfiniteDrive™ is known for delivering bizarre levels of performance. Mission R really takes the electric motorcycles to a whole new level. James Parker designed the custom chassis for Mission R , it provides extraordinary feedback and control that outclass anything in its competition. The bike does 0-60 mph in 3 seconds. The bike is offered in three battery versions (12kWh, 15kWh, 17kWh). 12kWh version is capable of reaching a top speed of 140 mph while the maximum range it can cover is 105 miles. The other two versions have a longer range and are comparatively faster.

2)      Lightning motorcycle LS-218

The Lightning LS-218 is said to be the world’s fastest electric motorcycle. The Lightning LS-218 presents the first opportunity that consumers can purchase a production motorcycle capable of setting land speed records and winning road racing competitions that is as easy to ride as a 250cc commuter bike. Lightning’s LS-218 IPM liquid cooled 10,500 rpm electric motor can produce in excess of 200 hp and 168 ft/lbs of torque. Lightning’s proprietary Ultra High Power Density Drive system allows max power setting without any concerns of overheating. At highway speed, LS-218 can exceed 100 miles range per charge with the standard battery package.  You can use standard power outlets to charge LS-218.  At public fast charging stations, it takes less than half an hour to charge

3)      Harley Davidson - Live wire

Live wire is the first electric motorcycle made by the America’s iconic motorcycle brand Harley Davidson. The Live wire weighs 460lbs in weight, while it is powered with a 7 kWh battery and power output of the bike is near 74bhp. The claimed 0-60mph acceleration figure is less than 4 seconds and that sure is impressive for an electric motorcycle.

“Project LiveWire has reset expectations about what a Harley-Davidson motorcycle can be,” said Harley-Davidson Chief Marketing Officer Mark-Hans Richer.

Harley Davidson is also known for starting various campaigns to receive feedback from people across the countries about what they feel about Harley’s new electric bike. Harley started with a campaign in which they invited people from across various countries to ride the new Live wire and provide their feedback about the bike. In 2014, more than 15,000 customers provided feedback on Project LiveWire, including more than 6,800 who took demo rides, as part of a 30-stop tour across the United States and at a special consumer event for Latin American customers in Miami. 

4)      Energica Ego

Energica Ego sure is one of the prettiest electric motorcycles made till date. Not only it looks beautiful but it also performance like a maniac. It is known for doing 0-60mph gap in less than 3 seconds and it electronically restricted to a top speed of 240km/hr. Energica Ego runs on an 11.7 kWh battery pack and  the power output of the bike is 100 Kw (about 136bhp) from 4900 rpm TO 10500 rpm and 195 Nm of torque  from 0 TO 4700 rpm. Energica is equipped with one of the most futuristic dashboard ever seen on any motorcycle. The dashboard is composed of 4.3″ WQVGA 480×272 TFT Color Display, it is fitted with integral GPS system and is capable of displaying nine types of warning lights. Other features the dashboard is equipped with are Bluetooth real mode, Real time clock, External light detector, 6 + 6 current consumption lights and much more.

5)      Brammo Empulse R

The Empulse R is said to be the bike that changed the image of electric bikes being boring, silent and less exicting. Brammo changed that perception about the electric bike with the introduction of Empulse R in 2013. This bike is known for accelerating hard, great handling and a being a total electric hooligan. Empulse is equipped with two riding modes, the Normal and Sport mode. The Normal mode offers a smooth, gentle city-riding experience while the sport mode delivers a punchy, fast ride. The Empulse R is claimed to deliver 60bhp at 5,500 rpm which is as much power as Kawasaki and Suzuki’s 650cc twins, but torque is significantly stronger on the Brammo as it deliver 60.5 pound-feet of torque. Empulse R runs on a 9.3 kWh battery pack while the wet weight of the bike is near 460lbs.
