Top 5 Indian Motorsports personalities who made big internationally

Snapshot: We compiled a list of the top 5 race car drivers from India who made it big internationally.

We all have that childhood dream of becoming a race car driver some day. Speed brings adrenaline and excitement, a feeling that only racing could provide. And there are innumerous forms of the motorsports, which take place in the world. But sadly, in India, the racing scene is not that mature and only a handful of race car drivers has made it big in the international arena.

Not until recently, when India hosted their first-ever Formula One race, most of the people came to know about this high adrenaline, highly competitive and highly dangerous form of sports. And with the interest, they started recognizing F1 stars, among which were a couple of Indian drivers too. But there's a lot more racers outside the F1 too, including A1 GP, WRC, and 24-hours Le Mans.

So, here's a list of the top 5 race car drivers from India who made it big internationally.

Narain Kartikeyan

If you are from India, and follow motorsports of any sorts, it would be foolish of you, not to know who Narain Kartikeyan is. The ace Indian driver is credited with putting India on the mainstream international racing circuit and became the first Indian to race in an F1 race. While his F1 career was not as exciting, he did manage to do good in A1 GP. He has also raced in the prestigious 24-hours Le Mans and is currently racing in the Super Formula Series for the past 2 years.

Karun Chandhok

Karun Chandhok took forward from where Narain Kartikeyan left! He proved many cynicists wrong that Narain's arrival at the F1 is a one time event and India doesn't have the potential to produce super racers. Son of a veteran racer, and now chairman of FMSCI, Vicky Chandok, Karun Chandhok inherited the racing DNA from his father. Karun is the only racer to compete in the Formula E championship, and has an illustrious 24 hours of Le Mans career. He has raced for Lotus and HRT in the F1 championship and also competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Armaan Ebrahim

Armaan Ebrahim, though not too successful as some of the aforementioned racers, has an exhaustive experience of representing India in many in many international motorsport events. He is the son of veteran race car driver, Akbar Ebrahim, and has featured in many TV series, including the one with the Red Bull F1 driver, David Coulthard in 2009. He has raced FIA GT Series for BMW Auto Service Team India and A1 GP.

Aditya Patel

Aditya Patel is the Indian racecar driver who races and represents Audi Motorsports India. He has represented India in various international race series like the F-BMW, VW Scirocco-R Cup, ADAC GT Masters, International GT open and is now racing in the Audi R8 LMS Cup. He is the kin of veteran race car driver Kamlesh Patel with years of experience in karting.

Gaurav Gill

While Formula 1 is all about speed and technology, Rally racing is all about your control of the car and your ability to judge take risks. India has been hosting Raid de Himalayas and other rally stuff for long now and Gaurav Gill has been the most revered and iconic personality to win all these events as well as represent India's name in the world of rallying over the years. Sadly, not many people know his name, despite being one of the biggest names in the Indian Motorsports scene.
