Top 5 upcoming cars in India to watch out for!

Snapshot: Hot cars coming your way, here's a look of what's around the corner!

Hatchbacks and sub-four meter SUVs remain in flavour and are the bread and butter of many manufacturers at large. Most do well in the Indian market despite the shortcomings. Future car models are expected to be much better in terms of overall safety, and the competition is expected to further intensify with new options. Here’s a list of top upcoming cars!

#1 Tata Nexon

The sub-four meter SUV was first showcased at the AutoExpo 2016, and we also drove it recently. In our opinion, it's the finest car yet from the house of Tata. From concept to production, it has not transformed much but retains most of the distinguishing design features like ceramic beltline around waist, fog lamps, wide grille, huge wheel arches etc.

It would offer great space and would be a true five seater, packaged neatly in a compact platform. Expect great amount of luggage space, making it a perfect all rounder. With the Tiago, Tata has already made a strong comeback and with the Nexon, it's expected to retain that momentum. High set headlamps, taillight along with tall shoulder line give the car a much bolder and macho style. And in the features department, the car would offer, a navigation system, voice assistance with a touch screen infotainment system. It would also offer 1.2-litre turbo petrol motor along with the 1.5-litre diesel. AMT is under development and would be offered later. Expect the car to be competitively priced between Rs 7-10 lakh bracket as it would lock horns with the more established rivals like EcoSport, Vitara Brezza Renault Duster etc.

[img#cons]Cons: Brand Perception

#2 Hyundai Elite i20

Hyundai Verna

The Hyundai Elite i20 by all measures look fresh, and to keep it fresher still, Hyundai is expected to launch a minor facelift early next year. Presently, Hyundai is testing the car in India.

Though the test mule has been caught several times, few details are out yet. Hyundai is expected to use the latest design language and the car would most likely come with a more prominent grille at the front. The rear too is expected to carry minor changes.

The interiors are expected to have little or no changes, though we might see a new motor in the form of 1.0-litre turbo-petrol. Not only would it be more powerful than the 1.2-litre motor, the efficiency is expected to be same as the larger 1.2-litre motor.

Equipment level, features etc. are likely to remain unchanged.

#3 Maruti Swift

Swift Dzire

The third generation Swift has already been shown to the world. In India however, it is yet to make a debut, and it is expected to make an appearance at the Auto Expo 2018. Also, it is expected to be launched soon afterwards. The Swift is based on an all new platform and would bear all new exterior and interior. However, it would be carrying forward the old engine options.

The petrol would be the tried and tested 1.2-litre motor and diesel would be the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre unit. This time around the car would weigh less, so you can expect marginally better performance and economy. It’s expected that this time the car is likely to offer automatic gearbox as one of the transmission options with petrol.

Like with other cars, Maruti would be offering all safety features like ABS, EBD, airbags as standard.

[img#pros]Pros: Performance, Frugal

#4 Ford EcoSport

Ford India would manufacture the EcoSport in India and export it to the other world markets. The new car carries visual changes to the face and bigger headlamps that make it look less bulky and Kuga inspired. The overall silhouette remains unaltered though. While the car showcased did not carry a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, India version is expected to retain in the latest car to complete the SUV look.

Export version of the car would offer many other engine options, in addition to a 4X4 system. India offing would continue unchanged and you would get 1.5-litre diesel, 1.5-litre dragon petrol (would be a three-cylinder motor) and 1.0-litre turbo petrol. A 4X4 transmission would also not be offered in India.

EcoSport continues to be a hot favourite in the sub-four meter SUV space despite missing out a few features that the competition offers in this space. The car is expected to overcome the shortcoming with options like SYNC 3, B&O music system with 10 speakers and a touchscreen system.

Great build quality and high-speed driving dynamics have been two USPs of EcoSport, the new car is expected to retain both characteristics. We only wish that it offered a 4X4 system, which would have made it a complete package.

#5 Renault Captur

Fait Avventura

Duster has been Renault’s most successful car till date and the entry-level hatch, Kwid, has proved with its off-the-roof sales chart that it was no fluke either. The decision to develop India-specific product was a conscious choice, a decision that was most likely influenced by Koleos failure. Renault now understands that the Indian audience is price-conscious and there can be no compromises there.

The Kaptur is expected to be launched around Diwali and it would be positioned above the Duster. You can expect it to be priced quite competitively since Renault has tried to achieve a high level of localization with the car. It’s based on the same modular, M0 platform as the Duster so there would be decent space on the inside. The car would most likely offer 1.5-litre K9K motor and a 1.5-litre petrol motor to start with. A 4x4 system and an automatic transmission are expected to be offered later.

To compete with cars like Creta, Jeep etc. it would offer range-topping equipment like touch screen infotainment system and a lot of standard safety equipment.
