Without doubt, the compact SUVs are the new hatches of Indians, with enough money, they become the default choice of the Indian buyers. There will be several new SUVs that will be announced for India market while the existing ones that are supposed to receive an update would also be unveiled. We bring the top SUVs that you should watch out for at the expo and perhaps wait until they finally arrive.

Honda BR-V = The BR-V was unveiled in Indonesia and makes it India debut at the AutoExpo 2016, we drove the car sometime back in Japan and brought a test ride review too. Considering the popularity of SUVs in Indian market and the success that some of the other cars like EcoSport and Duster have enjoyed, BR-V is extremely important product for Honda India market.

BR-V is based on the Mobilio and borrows styling cues from it. It would be a seven seater with 1.5-litre diesel and 1.5-litre petrol engine options and would compete more closely with Creta for that reason. It’s expected that the SUV would get multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability assist, hill start assist etc. among other features and would be priced between Rs 9-13 lac bracket when launched in September this year.

BMW X1 = Details of the new X1 was unveiled by the company in June 2015 and the car would make its India debut at the AutoExpo and might simultaneously go on sale too. Initially, only the 2.0 litre diesel engine with an 8-speed steptronic gearbox would be on offer. The engine makes about 150Ps of power and 330Nm of torque. Other notable features that the car would be equipped with include a head-up display, lane departure system, pedestrian warning system, collision warning system etc.

The car would be priced between Rs 33-43 lac bracket and would compete with cars like Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA Class. Base variants (sDrive 16d and sDrive 18i) that would be offered with three cylinder 1.5-liter engine might be offered but at a later stage, of which 16d variant would produce about 116Ps while the 18i would generate 136Ps of power.

Renault Duster (Updated) = The Renault Duster is already a favourite among Indians and updates would be mostly cosmetic on the outside and include re-profiled headlamps and taillamps, new grille and bumper. The promotional video of the car for Brazil market shows that interiors are offered with new fabrics and two-tone scheme, in terms of feature you get a cruise control and a 6-speed AMT transmission and redesigned interiors. The touch screen navigation system has been slightly repositioned too. The car is expected to go on sale in India during Jan-Feb, 2016.

List of features like AWD system, EBD, stability control system, brake assist, traction control, hill assist and three different engine options that together make it a desirable product would remain in the offering. There might be a marginal price hike considering the new set of features and changes that it would come with.

Ssanyong Tivoli = For those of you who are not familiar with the brand Ssanyong should know it’s the same Korean company that offers the Rexton in collaboration with Mahindra. The car would be showcased at the AutoExpo and would probably be priced between Rs 9-13 Lac when launched in October this year. Tivoli would most likely be offered with an equal capacity 1.6-litre diesel and petrol engines that come coupled with a six speed transmission.

A 4X4 option would likely be available as an option too among other features like ABS with EBD, ESP, airbags and hill assist. There’s unconfirmed news that a smaller capacity three cylinder petrol motor is under works and will power the car in future.

Jeep = Perhaps the most anticipated car brand in this list, the Jeep has its charm that few other can match. The company would be bringing two cars - Grand Cherokee and Wrangler Unlimited to India and both would be launched between May – June 2016, the former is expected to be priced between Rs 35-50 lac bracket while the latter would be in the range of Rs 25-32 Lac.

The Grand Cherokee would come equipped with a V6, 3.0-litre diesel engine and would lock horns with Land Cruiser Parado, Mercedes-Benz M-Class while the retro looking Wrangler would use a 2.8-litre 4-cyliner diesel engine, good for about 190Ps or power to compete with the likes of Fortuner, Audi Q3, Ford Endeavour etc.

Suzuki Vitara Brezza = The Vitara Brezza would be yet another attempt from Suzuki. The heavily disguised car has been spotted several times on-road while undergoing tests. The sub-four meter SUV is one of the most important and critical launch for Suzuki in India. It’s expected to come with 1.3-litre diesel motor that develops about 90bhp of power and 200Nm of torque.

According to several unconfirmed sources, at the later stage, Suzuki would also offer larger capacity 1.5-litre petrol engine and 1.5-litre diesel unit. The car would compete directly against the Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster and other compact SUVs. The car would be priced competitively in the range of Rs 7-12 Lac price range when launched in April this year.

Hyundai Tuscon = The premium compact crossover sells by the name ix35 in other world markets and is quite popular too. The new design language that’s being used make the car look very premium and pleasing to look at and is in fact the main highlight of the car too. The car’s offered with three engine options in other markets – 2-litre CRDi, 2.0-litre MPi, 1.6 T-GDi and there’s a choice of 6-speedmanual and auto and a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. It’s not clear which of the engines might be offered.

The car would be showcased at the AutoExpo and would not be launched until August, this year. When launched, the car would compete with cars like Honda CR-V, Nissan X-trail India.

Volkswagen Tiguan = The India bound SUV was showcased at Frankfurt previously and the design looks all new that looks inspired from the Cross Coupe GTE. The car is expected to be tech laden and offer comfort and tech features like 3 Zone automatic climate control system, panoramic roof, electric adjustable seats, pedestrian warning, lane assist departure warning system, airbags etc.

The car is available with a total of eight engine options and would offer smart start-stop hybrid system that would make the car extremely fuel efficient. The range of engine that would be offered in India has not been confirmed yet. The interior quality would be typical faultless Volkswagen and it is expected that the car would be priced between Rs 25 – 30 Lac when launched in India in February.

Toyota Fortuner = Some time back, CEO and President Akio Toyoda from the Toyota motors made a promise and said “No more boring cars”. The Fortuner is a step in that direction and the car is a huge departure from the car it’s set to replace. It remains a potent SUV and utilises the same platform as the Hilux, yet maintains the ability of going anywhere, however, the looks have been softened somewhat to make it look more urban.

The 7-seater SUV has been massively revamped too from the inside too, interiors are premium and loaded with features like Sat-Nav system, under the hood too, the car would get a range of newer efficient engines – 2.8-litre diesel producing 177Ps and 2.4-litre diesel good for 150Ps. The car would compete with Ford Endeavour and Chevrolet Trailblazer in Indian market.

Nissan X-trail = The Nissan X-trail is a mid-size crossover that competes with cars like Honda CR-V, Hyundai SantaFe etc. in Indian market but unlike them, this would be a Hybrid. Will be powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine and would most likely be brought in through the CBU route. The electric motors along with the engine produce about 179bhp of power.

The car is expected to be extremely fuel-efficient and offer about 20kmpl of average. The car would also host a list of features like emergency braking system, intelligent park assist, navigation and information system with email readout and voice control system. It’s expected that the car would be priced at around Rs 30 Lac when launched in Feb this year.
