The new TVS Akula 310 was one of the major attractions at the recently held Auto Expo 2016. Brand new design, freshly made engine and its sporty characteristics sit as the crux of this product. As per reports, the Company might launch the new Akula 310 (meaning Shark in Russian), as Apache RTR 300. Here we list down some interesting facts about this upcoming entry level sports bike from TVS Motor Company.
The new TVS Akula 310 is expected to be powered by the same 313cc, water-cooled, single-cylinder 4-stroke engine, four valves motor as seen on the BMW G 310 R that is scheduled to launch in India by initial month of 2017. The mill is expected to generate 34 hp of power and 28 Nm of torque, and will be mated to Constant-mesh 6-speed transmission integrated into the motor housing.
The Akula 310 has been designed with participation from the company’s factory race drivers under the umbrella of TVS Motor Company and its association with BMW Motorrad. According to the Company, the concept of this performance racing motorcycle is a tribute to TVS Racing’s 33 years of dominant race heritage. Even though the production model will shed all of its carbon body, we think it will still carry the same look and aggressive styling as the original concept.
Unlike the concept version, which came with all the extensive usage of carbon fibre body parts, the production version will shed all of its carbon fibre body in order to keep the production cost to the minimum. This fully faired motorcycle will come with notable features such as trellis frame, an aluminium sub-frame, upside-down front forks, gill-vents for thermal efficiency, Ram air induction, split seats, clip-on handlebars, LED tail-lights, lightweight aluminium components, wider tyre, dual disc brakes with ABS and a completely digital instrumental console.
Though there is no official information available about the launch date of the motorcycle, but if reports are to be believed, this fully faired expected to hit Indian two-wheeler market by this festive season.
Pricing and Rivals
We expect the Akula 310 to come with a price tag of somewhere between Rs 2 lakh to 2.20 lakh. Based on its expected price tag and estimated specification, it will rival against the likes of Kawasaki Ninja 300, Yamaha YZF-R3, KTM RC 390 and Benelli TNT 300 motorcycle.
The BMW G 310 R comes with a company claimed mileage of 35 kmpl. TVS Akula 310 will use the same motor but it will be slightly tuned for its race specs, so don’t expect too much of fuel economy. We think that it will return a fuel efficiency of somewhere between 25-30kmph.
TVS Motors has been known for its racing heritage in the country. Despite that, it still has a long way to go before it transforms its racing success in its motorcycles. In fact, TVS has not launched any premium performance motorcycle. Now, if priced correctly, we are sure it will be, this upcoming fully faired sports bike will create a massive stir in the domestic market.
