Video- A road trip that ended in 26 years covering 900000kms

Snapshot: They managed to do 215 countries, averaging at 8 country a year.

If you are passionate enough for driving, you will have that one dream to conquer the world in your car doing a road trip. Very rare are the moments when a person gets a chance to live this dream in real life, and this is exactly, what this German couple accomplished in their Mercedes Benz 300 GD named Otto, covering 900000 kms over the span of 26 years.

Gunther and Christine Holtorf had one goal in mind, to cover as many counties as possible before retiring.  Well, they managed to do 215 countries, averaging at 8 country a year. Not bad, we say! Speaking in terms of the facts, that's the same distance that could have taken you from Earth to Moon and back and still left with some extra miles to hang out. In fact, one of the feat they achieved was to reach at the base camp of the Mount Everest.

When the couple decided to start the journey in the G Wagen, it was only 10 years old. "In 1988, when I bought the car I was a bit more skeptical about the promise made by Mercedes-Benz, namely 'Where there's a G, there's a way'. After all, I'd already seen something of the world beforehand and had a rough idea of what the vehicle would have to endure on this kind of world tour!" said Gunther Holtorf. But the Otto didn't let Gunther let down, travelling through some treacherous times.

Now, after the end of the Journey, Mercedes is celebrating their 35th anniversary of the 'G' with the special edition models. If you are interested  to see the Otto, the car will finally take a brief rest at the Mercedes Benz Museum at the Stuttgart before again going to a Journey across Europe at the selected dealerships, coming February.

"I promise that there will still be a G-Class in the future. Will there be more characters of Mr Holtorf's ilk in the future? I hope so," said Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. He was impressed by the driver and vehicle during the official ceremony where the car was handed over to the Mercedes Museum.

Another reason to watch out for Otto, is the fact that, it is still running on the Stock for the past 26 years, except for some minor changes in the suspension to handle that extra load of the couple for the whole journey. "The entire drivetrain with the engine, transmission and axles is still original," said Holtorf, claiming that the car mostly remained the stock through the journey.

If you are interested to watch the epic journey, you can see a documentary by the BBC on the couple. Other than that, watch a brief video about the same here.
