It was a sun soaked Sunday morning in the and hot humid weather of Gurgaon and I was given a chance of freestyling with the Ford Freestyle. Well, it wasn’t a very pleasant weather to enjoy the weekend, but when you get to sit behind the wheel of a sporty looking car and take it to perform some mild off-roading, the weather cannot be a barrier.

Ford India launched the Freestyle cross-hatch earlier this year, which is the ‘ready to hit the dust’ type mutant alter ego of the Ford Figo hatchback. Ford didn’t take the usual route of terming it as a compact SUV, but dubbed it as a CUV, standing for Compact Utility Vehicle. They call it India’s first CUV. Despite igniting the image of the Ford Figo, the Ford Freestyle has more to offer than its hatchback sibling.

Despite not being loaded with high end off-roading technologies like the Ford Endeavour, the Ford Freestyle comes with some exciting capabilities that make you fear-free when you dare to take the roads less traveled. One such technology is the Hill Ascent system. This is the segment leading tech being offered by Ford Freestyle it allows the driver 3 seconds of time to halt at one place before rolling back, while going uphill. That might be ‘just’ 3 seconds, but in real scenario, it is considered as very precious time. Believe it or not, the Ford Freestyle’s Hill Ascent technology is as efficient as any other high-end cars.

I also got the chance to take the Ford Freestyle for little bit of slush bashing to check its water wading capability and it performed perfectly. However, it won’t be very practical trying to cross a river with this car as it can take the challenge of crossing a stream, but not deep water body. During this slush pit challenge, all you need to do is just steer the car, no need to press any pedal, as the car’s system will perform all the tasks for you. That’s pretty interesting!

The car also comes with impressive stability that was visible during steep cornering when the speedometer was clocking at around 80 kmph. The Ford Freestyle has been designed to protect the underbody and bumpers, which is a very practical idea considering the rugged and pothole filled roads in various parts of the country. I got to check the capability while going over the artificial ditches and potholes.

So far, the Ford Freestyle is a perfect car to go on an occasional drive on the roads less travelled. The able 1.2-litre Ti-VCT and 1.5-litre TDCi engines along with the intelligent technologies of the car give you peace of mind and let you unleash your inner kid. So far, it was a weekend well spent with the Ford Freestyle!
